It could do nothing less -- starring in the half-hour series was Flight of the Conchords, a genuine two-man digi-folk band from New Zealand consisting of comedians Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie, who created the property in concert (no pun intended) with James Bobin. The two protagonists, cleverly named Jemaine and Bret, had come all the way from their mother country to hit it big in New York City. There were only two things keeping them from skyrocketing to stardom: they never seemed to get any decent bookings, and they were bloody awful. Doing rather less than his best to make household names out of Jemaine (the one with the glasses) and Bret (the one with the beard) was their agent-manager Murray (Rhys Darby), whose day job as a cultural attaché at the New Zealand Consulate's tourism division gave him plenty of free time -- if not plenty of money -- to arrange such gigs as a retro rock video in which the boys were dressed in ill-fitting cardboard robot suits, and an outdoor concert in Central Park (the wrong Central Park in the wrong city, worse luck). Evidently, Murray was one of only three people in Manhattan who even acknowledged the existence of Flight of the Conchords. The other two were the president -- and only member -- of the band's fan club, an overaged groupie named Mel (Kristen Schaal), who obsessively and lustfully dogged the boys' path, usually chauffeured by her unbelievably unflappable husband; and Dave (Arj Barker), who owned the pawnshop where Jemaine and Bret's instruments were habitually in hock. The series' semi-improvised dialogue and surrealistic storylines were counterpointed by fantasy musical sequences, which gaudily spoofed the music-video clichés of the past three decades; these vignettes were invariably better than Flight of the Conchords' actual performances, though not by much. Though probably best appreciated by "insiders" in the music business, Flight of the Conchords was broad enough in appeal to tickle the fancy of any comedy fan, while retaining just enough deadpan subtlety to induce quiet chuckles along with the belly laughs.     wickedly droll + good playing/singing

    Dry nerds who are trying to be cool and successful as they storm (not) New York. Periodically break into well-played and sometimes riotous music videos. The nerd/chic recalls Napolian Dynamite. The deadpan parodies take me back to classic SNL. Clever, harmless (barely, if at all, blue), good fun. Not 100% genius, but comedy never is.

    Two Charming guys from New Zealand play "musical" comedy.

    These 2 dudes from New Zealand are fun, musically inclined, and a little bit "blue". Their lyrics are silly enough to make you laugh out loud, and their musicianship makes it very easy to listen to.

    Bret and Jemaine's world is so much better than ours

    I don't purchase too many DVD's because there are so few that warrant repeated viewing. This one does - either to memorize the lyrics to the songs or just to decipher the sometimes thick New Zealand accent of Bret, Jemaine or their manager, Murray. While Bret and Jemaine, sneaky comedic geniuses that they are, are the focal point of the show, the supporting cast of characters always add subtle coloring to the show. I can't get enough of the deadpan hilarity of Murray. I may not be as obsessive in my love for the boys as Mel, their stalker-ish fan, I will say that they may be only the 4th most popular folk parody duo in New Zealand - behind a Flight of the Conchords tribute band, of all things - they are number one, or at least two, in my house.

    Kiwi Humour at its best!!!

    Check it out...Season 1 HBO comedy series based on a couple of very witty New Zealand lads living in NY trying to make it big in the music industry! Flight Of The Conchord's Jemaine and Brett are hilarious .. as are Murray the Manager, Mel the Stalker and Dave the American dude! <BR/><BR/>The music is funny catchy and quirky "Its business ..Its business time" and has just fetched the FOTC four NZ music awards (October 2008) including International Achievement Award <BR/><BR/>Can't wait for Season 2!!!

    can't stop laughing

    I really enjoy this off beat humor. The songs are hilarious. Brett and Jemaine must have watched some Buster Keaton. They have the same deadpan, luckless aura. That's high praise... Buster is the best.

    AWESOME!

    This show is sooooo funny, and a good show to watch if your just chilling at your house, or at a friends house, it's a really awesome show, i really recommend it.

    hilarious!

    this comedy band-duo kicks non-stop foolish frivolity from it's bizarre characters to their absurd songs...a must-see for the new generation of pop culture.

    Super-duper cool

    This is one of the funniest, wittiest shows you will ever see. The combination of humor and awesome songs bring you laughs time after time. You can't help but laugh at the silly antics of these New Zealanders.
