Overview

Little more than an animated version of The Honeymooners set during the Stone Age, The Flintstones was, until The Simpsons, the most successful prime-time animated series in television history. This box set contains every episode from the program's second season. The show featured Fred Flintstone, a good-hearted but often blustery everyman who lives with his wife, Wilma, and next door to his best friend, Barney Rubble, and his wife, Betty.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
The modern Stone Age family continued to borrow from the Honeymooners playbook in its second season -- in the episode "The Missing Bus," Fred even drives a bus like his forebear, Ralph Kramden. But as prime time television's first animated families, the Flintstone and Rubble's place in pop culture history was chiseled in stone. The classic theme song would not debut until Season 3, and such benchmark episodes as the birth of Pebbles, the adoption of Bam-Bam, and "Ann-Margrock" were also in the future. But this sophomore season is consistently entertaining as it puts a prehistoric slant on time-honored sitcom convention. There are the classic get-rich-quick schemes ("The Hit Song Writers" with guest star Hoagy Carmichael); the battles of the sexes ("Fred Flintstone Woods Again," "The Happy Household," "Fred Strikes Out"); the constant testing of Fred and Barney's friendship ("Feudin' and Fussin," "Impractical Joker"); and, throughout, the blunderings of "blowhard" Fred. For several episodes this season, Daws "Huckleberry Hound" Butler pinch-voiced as Barney for Mel Blanc, who was critically injured in a car accident. Commentaries on three episodes, a documentary about the series' history, original TV commercials, selections from the original Flintstones album with the original voice cast, and a segment on how to draw Fred make this four-disc set one for the time capsule.
