Amy misses her mother and has never enjoyed a very warm relationship with her father, so the first few months in her new home are very difficult for her. However, one day Amy finds a nest full of eggs, which was tossed away by land developers clearing a wooded area. Amy brings the eggs home and builds a makeshift incubator; a few weeks later, a flock of tiny Canadian Geese are hatched. While caring for her new pets makes Amy happier, a problem soon presents itself -- young geese "imprint" on the first creature they see after hatching and follow it, as if it's their mother. Without a mother to show them how to fly south for the winter, how will they learn normal migratory patterns? Thomas comes up with a solution to the problem: as a hobby, he flies Ultralights, lightweight aircraft that look like gliders with engines. If he puts Amy in an Ultralight and has her fly the migratory route to the South, perhaps the birds will follow her and learn the route their mother would normally teach them. Amy's adventures help her learn about independence as she tries to teach it to the birds, bringing her closer to her father.

Fly Away Home is a rousing family tale at which Mom and Dad should find themselves as enthralled as the kids. Without the sugar-coating that plagues so many youth-oriented films, it addresses such serious topics as environmentalism, death, divorce, and reconciliation. As father and daughter, Jeff Daniels and Anna Paquin turn in strong performances; the supporting geese are no less important. The adept director Carroll Ballard and cinematographer Caleb Deschanel previously worked together on The Black Stallion, and their subtle, delicate work is similarly impressive here. A credit to all involved, Fly Away Home is the rare family film that inspires as it entertains.

    Great movie for everyone

    I saw this movie years ago when it first came out and really enjoyed it. I recently saw it again several times on TV and it reminded me of how much I enjoyed it years ago...so much so that I purchased it. My mom also really enjoyed it and now owns a copy for herself. It has great visuals and a sweet storyline. I think it is a movie that most will enjoy.

    Excellent Film, Outstanding Extras

    This film not only holds you from the wondrous emergence of baby duckings out of their shells,their innate imprinting and group stumbling following of the very first Being they see, which happens to be a young girl instead of their lost mother,to wherever she goes, and as they mature,
    the compassionate and humanitarian realization by the girl's father that
    these, by now, loved and delighful 'pets' have no future unless they find
    a way to lead them on to their essential migration. You witness the father, a jack of all trades, but whose hobby is airplanes, devises that means of trying to LEAD them South to where they can become integrated
    with their Species and survive. You witness many, many failed efforts and final success to lead the adult ducks, who you have come to care about, in the air, amidst increasing publicity and enthusiasm, and you feel good about a very nice but hardly possible story. BUT, then you are gifted with TWO substantial DOCUMENTARIES about the Man and associates who ACTUALLY succeeded in ACCOMPLISHING THIS generous trip! The well-acted,
    believable "fictional" movie turns out to be further appreciated because
    you have now learned it was based on a TRUE action. Highly recommended for every member of the family,on this DVD with meaningful "Extras"!

    Geese can make you feel good?

    This is such an inspirational movie for what you can do if you really set out to do something. The young girl loses everything, at least she feels that way. A father trying to help his daughter, yet not being successful. Geese are the one thing that helps bring a father and daughter back together. This movie shows you the love and care for one another. Fly away home with its amazing music that couldn't have been done any other way brings tears and emotion to your heart. You will not be dissapointed or feel as if you have wasted 2 hours of your life. A great gift for any animal lover out there.

    THEY ARE CANADA GEESE, NOT 'CANADIAN GEESE'

    I wish the AllMovie Guide had bothered to fact-check and list the proper species. Aside from that very annoying fact, this is a favorite movie.

    A Heartwarming Story of Love and Trust

    Fly Away Home is a heartfelt story of a developing relationship between a 13-year old girl and her estranged father. Thomas Alden (Jeff Daniels) travels to New Zealand to bring his daughter Amy (Anna Paquin) home to Canada following the death of her mother. The adventure begins when Amy rescues an abandoned nest of goose eggs, and, as she watches them hatch, imprints on the goslings and becomes their mother. In an effort to earn Amy¿s trust, Thomas commits to building two ultralights in hopes that Amy¿s geese will follow them to a warmer winter habitat. Watch for metaphors between Amy¿s maturing and her goslings becoming geese. I love this movie and have yet to see it through dry eyes.

    Special Edition extras are GREAT!

    This new Special Edition of Fly Away Home is a great DVD. It includes 3 documentaries, one about the movie, and two about the real Operation Migration team. This includes the 48 minute ''Ultra Geese'' video which gives a bit of history on the project. Fascinating stuff.
