Flying Leathernecks

Overview

Flying Leathernecks had a notorious reputation for most of the laserdisc era as one of the worst-looking lasers ever released; the original VidAmerica LD was tied with the same company's issue of Howard Hawks' The Thing as one of the most wretched-looking titles ever issued in a high-end video format. Just to show how things have changed in 20 years, the trailer of Flying Leathernecks that appears on the Warner Home Video DVD release looks better than the old LD did. And as for the movie, from the opening credits...

And as for the movie, from the opening credits -- and the shots of the sky behind the fighter planed in flight -- it is breathtaking, arguably the best-looking color film to date to emerge from the RKO library, or at least a close tie with John Ford's She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. The 27 chapters also show a high degree of care taken with the production of this disc, and the audio is very cleanly mastered, if very slightly low in volume compared with some other 2004 vintage discs. The movie itself is a dramatic and topical curio, juxtaposing two actors who comprised a fascinating duality -- two-fisted hero-of-the-right John Wayne and equally manly and macho Robert Ryan, who was often thought of as the left's answer to Wayne -- that pairing, coupled with two-fisted war action and a liberal budget, make this one of the choicer war movies of its era.
