Overview

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days co-stars Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey re-team on the big screen for this adventurous tale about a treasure-hunting couple whose eight-year quest for the ultimate prize has left them flat broke and fresh out of gas. Ben "Finn" Finnegan McConaughey is a treasure hunter who has made it his mission in life to track down the Queen's Dowry -- a legendary collection of 40 chests filled with priceless treasure, and lost at sea in 1715. But in his single-minded quest to track down this sizable booty, Finn has sadly neglected his marriage to his loving wife Tess Hudson. Tess has grown tired of the hunt, and now she's looking to start her life anew by going to work on the massive yacht of globetrotting billionaire Nigel Honeycutt Donald Sutherland. But just as Tess begins to relish the freedom on her new, laid-back lifestyle, Finn uses his roughish charm to convince the adventurous baron and his debutante daughter Gemma Alexis Dziena that the elusive Spanish treasure is finally within reach. Of course no magnate in his right mind would reject the prospect of tracking down the most mythical treasure on the planet, and now as the hapless Tess is forced on yet another wild goose chase, her husband's former mentor Moe Fitch Ray Winstone and a greedy local gangster Kevin Hart up the stakes by joining in on the race.

All Movie Guide
The stars of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days reunite for what could have been another lazy paycheck movie, another in a string of undemanding romantic comedies featuring Matthew McConaughey as a charming scoundrel. Rather, Fool's Gold has the action-adventure trappings of McConaughey's Sahara -- which, granted, could also be a bad thing. But he and Kate Hudson make this movie work with their undeniable chemistry, timing, and gifts for physical comedy. It's worth noting that the Florida Keys setting doesn't hurt. When it comes to hunts for buried treasure involving hapless yet charismatic characters who aren't too distantly separated from each other on the scale from hero to villain, Fool's Gold is the kind of movie you want. Director Andy Tennant does a good job keeping the tone light, without removing the specter of real danger hanging over the whole enterprise. He does this through a handful of funny, smartly choreographed near-death escapes for McConaughey's Finn, where someone usually ends up getting shot in the foot. There are good supporting performances here, from Ewen Bremner as a Russian diver, Donald Sutherland as a yacht-owning billionaire, Alexis Dziena as his heiress daughter, and Kevin Hart as a rapper-turned-Caribbean gangster named Big Bunny. In fact, this motley crew of characters gives Fool's Gold the feel of one of Carl Hiaasen's satirical Florida-based mystery novels, filled with quintessentially Floridian lowlifes. But make no mistake -- it's the zippiness of the relationship between Finn and Hudson's Tess that makes this movie work. The nearly divorced couple, their heads firmly planted in the clouds, bicker like people who love each other despite -- or perhaps because of -- their ample supply of faults. You may hate yourself, consider yourself a bit the fool, for liking Fool's Gold, but it's a valid reaction to the finished product.

    um, yeah...

This movie wasn't very good. I was disappointed and I didn't even have high expectations for it. The first movie I ever walked out on.

    eh

I felt great when my boyfriend came home with a chick-flick. When we watched it, however, I realized that Fools Gold is just like every other chick-flick, nothing special. Yes, the begining is funny and I love Matthew and Kate together, but all the same slightly boring...Rent before you buy, okay?
