He's learned that the Tigers are about to be sold, and the new owners intend to trade him at the end of the season, and that his girlfriend Jane Kelly Preston is planning to leave him. For Love of the Game represents a change of pace for director Sam Raimi, best-known for the Evil Dead trilogy and the acclaimed suspense drama A Simple Plan 1998 although Raimi, a baseball fan born in Michigan, doubtless enjoyed making a film featuring the Detroit Tigers.

Movie buffs: Don't miss the deleted scenes!

A beautiful and touching film Costner is just superb playing an inarticulate hero. Baseball has been Billy Chapel's whole life, since the age of 18 when he joined the Tigers. Now at the end of his playing career, he has the good luck to fall in love. Unfortunately, the object of his love, Kelly Preston, shows immaturities that are tough to deal with. She makes dates and simply fails to who up! But, she is beautiful, a single mother, and very needy. You have to wish them luck in sorting all of this out. Meanwhile, the perfect game is perfectly acted and photographed. A very strong film, immensely touching. You can feel this man's sore arm, and Costner shows you all of that with very few words or gestures. Loved this movie.

    Great baseball movie

Much better than the book, which is a rare thing. And despite the chick flick background and lapse in logic and time sequencing in the love story toward the end, it's baseball at its best and most sentimental. Well worth seeing...more than once. Kelly Preston is a doll, so there's that, too.

    One of Costner's best!

I always wanted to see this movie and never got the chance to before. I'm glad I was able to catch it. This is a great film because I have so much disdain for professional sports these days and it was nice to see an old-schooler on the mound. I always wondered what goes on in the mind's of pitchers and felt they really explored something that no one had done before except for maybe Bull Durham. Great film, worthy of owning!

    His best movie ever

I think this was Kevin Costner's best movie ever. I love the fact that the main plot is about baseball mixed in with love and some humor. Kelly Preston is also fantastic in this movie. It's a great date movie.

    Great couple file

This is a great 'couple film' - the love story for the romantic interwoven with the baseball story for the sports fan. Coster is back in his element (the baseball flick) but the one person in the movie that makes the sports side really work is Vin Sculley. For everyone who loves baseball, Sculley's voice calling the game makes the improbable event seem very real.

    I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!

For Love of the game is a baseball-romance story. Billy Chapel ( Kevin Costner) is a major League famous pitcher. One Day, he runs into a girl on the side of the road and helps her with her car trouble. It must have been love at first sight, because Jane (Kelly Preston) start to date. Soon, Billy gets in an accident and has trouble throwing, but he doesn't tell anyone that he's in major pain. Jane leaves him for a painter and Billy lets his personal life effect his career. (not smart...) So Watch the movie, 'For Love of the Game' and enjoy it!

    Costner Knows Baseball

Despite the annoying love story side line, this is a movie about ball players. Costner captures the intensity that most big leaguers devote to this game. Some are prima donnas, others are horses' behinds, but most are hard-working guys who love to play the game. This movie is about the latter ... all those men who love playing the game.

You'll Love ''For Love of the Game''!

This isn't usually the kind of movie I watch, so at first I thought it was going to be just another lovey-dovey romance story. But, as the story progressed, I was really interested. Also, if you got any kind of girlfriend, this is probaly a good movie to watch with them since they don't like blood and guts. Anyways, if you don't mind a little romance mixed with baseball, you'll love ''For Love of the Game''.
