Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Director Christopher Guest is at it again, this time skewering with gusto the Hollywood hype machine jointly operated by duplicitous studio executives, cynical entertainment journalists, and wide-eyed Internet geeks. Guest, who co-wrote the script with supporting player Eugene Levy, lampoons the ephemeral nature of movie-industry "buzz" while demonstrating its corrosive effect. Guest plays veteran sitcom director Jay Berman, whose ...

Guest plays veteran sitcom director Jay Berman, whose low-budget debut feature, Home for Purim, revolves around a Jewish family in the Deep South. While the film is still being made, rumors begin circulating to the effect that leading lady Marilyn Hack (Catherine O'Hara), leading man Victor Allan Miller (Harry Shearer), and supporting player Callie Webb (Parker Posey) are delivering Academy Award-worthy performances. The ensuing hubbub -- all of it perpetuating the unattributed speculation -- eventually takes a toll on Berman's modest little movie. Guest, allowing his quick-witted comic actors considerable latitude in ad-libbing their lines, wisely surrounds himself with the gifted stock ensemble seen in his previous gems A Mighty Wind and Best in Show. Regulars Fred Willard and Jane Lynch, for instance, make an inspired team as the unctuous hosts of an Entertainment Tonight-styled fluff show. Delivering a steady supply of chuckles rather than a barrage of belly laughs, For Your Consideration is continued proof of Guest and company’s spot-on ability to reveal truth by way of the funny bone.

    Not good

Wow, what a disappointment after seeing so many funny Christopher Guest movies, like Best in Show, A Mighty Wind, and Waiting for Guffman. I don't know what happened here, but this movie wasn't funny.
