Documentary filmmaker Lee Fulkerson explores the possibility that so-called "diseases of affluence," such as heart disease, can be reversed by simply adjusting our diets to include less processed and animal-based foods. Back in the 1960s, Cornell University nutritional scientist Dr. T. Colin Campbell was working to find a way to feed the citizens of impoverished Third World nations when a trip to the Philippines forever changed the way he thought about food consumption. There, he discovered that the rates of liver cancer among affluent children who subsisted on diets rich in animal-based foods were notably higher than in children consuming plant-based diets. Meanwhile, surgeon Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, head of the Breast Cancer Task Force at Cleveland Clinic, was also discovering that many of the diseases he was seeing in patients were practically nonexistent in areas of the world where people were primarily consuming plant foods. Several subsequent investigations by the researchers (who would not meet each other until the 1980s), including a groundbreaking study in China by Dr. Campbell, led them to the revelation that a whole-food, plant-based diet could prevent, and even reverse, such degenerative conditions as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and some forms of cancer. In this film, Fulkerson examines Dr. Campbell's and Dr. Esselstyn's theories by following the two doctors' individual, yet very similar, story arcs, from their farm-based upbringings to their astounding discoveries. The film also records the experiences of a group of patients suffering from chronic maladies as they participate in an experiment in which their diets are substantially altered and wholesome, plant-based food is, essentially, used as medicine.

Earth-shaking!  Life-changing!   The information revealed in this documentary and its significance for our collective health, wellness and for disease prevention is nothing short of revolutionary! This astonishing story is about how two cutting edge researchers and their colleagues developed a new, revolutionary scientific and medical understanding of human disease and its being caused, by and large, from eating toxic, unhealthy and even addictive foods.  It reveals a new way of viewing human health and wellness that offers a dawning hope for containing the impending crisis in sky-rocketing health care costs foreshadowed by a growing percentage of us who are overweight, diabetic, sedentary and aging. Pay no attention to the immature 'valley girl' jennifer918 and the supercilious, petulant diatribe she offered as a review.  Obviously, she did not pay attention in her biology classes.  Her main critique, based as it was on her false statement ‘eukaryotic have no cell walls’ is just laughable.  Of course eukaryotic cells have cell walls and they make up every single cell in our bodies and the bodies of every living thing on earth except bacteria. The exciting information revealed in this story was obtained over decades through the amazing work of these two pioneers, Dr. Campbell and Dr. Esselstyn.  It reveals their deep insights into the nature of human illness and the amazingly simple, effective and rapid “cure” they recommend: eating wholesome, natural, vegetable foods and grains and avoiding foods we know are toxic to our bodies and brains.  Watch it.  You won’t be sorry.

Cholesterol comes from two sources. It's produced in your body, mostly in the liver (about 1,000 milligrams a day). And it's found in foods that come from animals, such as meats, poultry, fish, seafood and dairy products. The American Heart Association recom-mends that your average daily intake of dietary cholesterol should be less than 300 milligrams. Remember, it is found only in foods from animals. Al-though it's not the same as a saturated fatty acid, dietary cholesterol can also raise your blood cholesterol level. You need cholesterol for your body to function normally, but your body makes enough so that you don't need to get more from the foods you eat. Cholesterol Dietary Cholesterol Dietary cholesterol is found in meat, poultry, seafood and dairy products. Foods from plants - such as fruits, vegetables, vegetable oils, grains, cereals, nuts and seeds - don't contain cholesterol. Egg yolks and organ meats are high in cholesterol. Shrimp and crayfish are somewhat high in cholesterol. Chicken, turkey and fish contain about the same amount of cholesterol as do lean beef, lamb and pork. This film will change your life!

I was watching the documentary by the same name. Wow! I was really looking forward to this and thought it would be great to share with my A & P classes. Wow! Yeah, not at all. Thirteen minutes in to the documentary (and I use that term here very loosely), the narrator is discussing that evil molecule: cholesterol. He goes on to say that cholesterol is found in all animals even humans. In humans, it plays a very important role in out cells' walls. WTH!!!! Seriously? Anyone who has payed remote attention in their high school biology class knows that animals have eukaryotic cells which HAVE NO CELL WALLS; that's what makes them unique. Seventeen minutes in, they are discussing an article published in an obscure Indian journal. The study found that if you expose rats (they looked like mice- STRIKE 2) to a particular carcinogen AND the patient has greater than 20% of their diet come from a protein called casein, it "turns on" the cancer. If less than 5% of the diet comes from casein the cancer is "turned off." Hmmmm. The next thing to be addressed SHOULD have been sources of casein and how much casein in various sources to give the viewer an idea. Of course, they ignored that idea and went in a different direction. Yep, seventeen minutes in and I am totally disgusted with this so-called "documentary." Read the book? Are you KIDDING? I've already wasted seventeen minutes of my life.............which I can't get back. Why would I waste hours reading the book.
