Overview

Four men come together to find out how and why the woman who raised them was killed in this hard-edged urban drama from director John Singleton. Short-tempered Bobby (Mark Wahlberg), struggling musician Jack (Garrett Hedlund), streetwise Angel (Tyrese Gibson), and hard-working Jeremiah (Andre Benjamin) are four guys who don't appear to have much in common, in terms of either race or temperament. However, these men have one very important bond -- all four were adopted and raised by the same woman (Fionnula Flanagan), and they all love her as a mother, and respect one another as brothers. When their mother is killed during a robbery at a grocery store, the four brothers come together for the funeral, but when they don't get straight answers about what happened to her, they begin looking into the crime themselves. The deeper they dig into the case, the more the brothers begin to suspect that the shooting wasn't an accident, and that powerful and unexpected forces were involved. Four Brothers marked one of the first starring roles for Andre Benjamin, better known as Andre 3000 of the top selling hip-hop group OutKast.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
This taut urban drama about four adopted brothers avenging the murder of their mother owes a lot to The Sons of Katie Elder, a 1965 horse opera that starred John Wayne and Dean Martin. In fact, this latest movie from director John Singleton (Shaft) owes a great deal to the western; its central conceit -- the desire for revenge driven by a code of familial loyalty -- has animated literally hundreds of movies in that genre. By setting the action in decaying Detroit during winter, Singleton trades picturesque vistas for the stark, gritty cityscape where crime and corruption run rampant, forcing the film’s protagonists to go outside the law in their quest for justice. Mark Wahlberg, Andre Benjamin (of rap duo Oukast), Tyrese Gibson, and Garret Hedlund play the racially mixed siblings whose love for their recently slain mother, Evelyn Mercer (Fionnula Flanagan), compels them to buck the police (represented by Terrence Howard, one of 2005’s rising stars, playing a sympathetic detective) and various politicians in their campaign against a local crime boss (Chiwetel Ejiofor, another actor of color having a tremendous year). Singleton’s previous movies haven’t always been dramatically or directorially cohesive, but Four Brothers represents a quantum leap in his development as a filmmaker. It’s carefully structured, evenly paced, and consistently well acted. The sometimes brutal action sequences aren’t just dropped into the narrative to artificially speed things up; they are organic to the plot and extremely well staged -- especially a protracted shootout at the Mercer home. The performances are uniformly exemplary, with Wahlberg especially good as the grim, taciturn brother who ramrods the revenge effort.

I loved this movie! It has so humor, action, brotherly love, it's awesome. It's just so amazing how they show what one person can do for so much for you. How one person has such an impact on you. The actors were amazing. Mark Wahlberg, a different role for him, but did awesome. Tyrese did a very good job as well!! I was shocked when Andre Benjamin was in this, but he did so great. And Garrett Hedlund, I loved him in this. His character was my favorite. Overall, this movie was amazing!

John Singleton, the inventor of the urban drama, is back with a major comeback and this time it's about revenge. The Mercer Brothers, unconventional family to say the least, take on the worst elements of the town till they get to the final murderer in this great vengeance-cum-satisfaction film after their mother is killed. The West is back in Detroit.

this is my number one movie. in my 17 years of life, i have never witnessed anything better. i love it. the meaning of love, life, and brotherhood has never been so strongly advised in any other movie than this one. i love the way the bond of the 4 adopted brothers is never broken. as the movie goes on you feel as though you are right next to the brothers, being part of them, trying to find out who did this, yet, when the brother jack dies you can't help but feel angry, sad, and such anxiety from one scene. from the tears you shed to the moments where you just cant help but laugh its a all around spectacular movie. filled with hope and love, its bound to get your standing ovation.

Four Brothers was a really good movie. Mark Wahlberg did a great job in it. It had tons of action that will blow you away from start to finish. I'm going to get this movie for my birthday and my dad is not going to stop me! Overall, I'll give this move an A+.

Like misogyny, elder abuse, ripped off plot lines and a high body count? This film is for you!! 4 brothers avenge their adopted mothers death by doing EXACTLY the opposite of what she would have wanted, by gunning down everyone even remotely connected to her killing. By murdering everyone in their way they proved themselves to be exactly the way the world viewed them, thugs. What a tribute to this woman who tried to show them another way. And what's with the roughing up of the sweet old man that she was seeing? Yikes. There are FAR better action movies out there.
