Foyle's War - Set 1

A wonderful discovery

My husband and I were delighted to discover this series; we bought it all on DVD so we can watch it repeatedly. The mysteries are not the real focus; rather, it is the well-rounded characters and the depiction of life under the threat of a German invasion. The picture that emerges is far from what one usually sees in WWII movies. For example, it is clear that Britain actually had quite a number of residents sympathetic to the Nazis. The splendid cast consists almost entirely of actors we had not previously seen and whose other projects we are now looking up, as they are terrific.

The Definition of Quality Writing and Acting

This is a thinking person's drama. I've just begun season three and continue to be engrossed by the historical accuracy of the writing, props and scenes. Although Foyle is a fictional detective, the events surrounding him during WWII were real. Once you finish one episode you can't wait to watch the next. Yet another example of fine BBC entertainment.

Wonderful series. While each episode is self-contained, the characters and their relationships with each other grow throughout. Enormously well-written and acted. One of the few series worth buying so episodes can be watched again and again.

Foyle's War - Set 1, Michael Kitchen, Anthony Howell, Honeysuckle Weeks, Julian Ovenden and featuring Edward Fox, Robert Hardy, David Horovitch, Rosamund Pike and Charles Dance

This is a trip back in time to London England 1940s. I was a child then and remember the bombing during World War 2 This is a wonderful series, carefully crafted, and visually perfect for the time frame. The costuming is exquisite. Foyle (played by Michael Kitchen),is a british detective trying to solve domestic crimes during war-time while bombs are landing in the streets around him. His driver is an equally clever actress who is assigned to accompany him and drive him to wherever he needs to be during his investigations. She is a delight. The characters play their parts well and it is easy to lose oneself in the time frame and life of London during this period. My husband and I recommend this series to all who love a detective story. Each of the DVDs in the set is priceless.

Well written, historically fascinating

I discovered this program only last year, bought the first series and was immediately hooked. Michael Kitchen says more with a raised eyebrow than most actors can with a soliloquy. Each episode provides a view of Britain's home front during the war and, incidentally includes an intriguing mystery as well. Highly recommended!

GREAT SERIES

Not your average "who done it" type of movies. Has actual historical type events in the background. Not your typical "No Brainer" movie, where no thinking is required to follow the plot. Very well done. I have watched series one and two, and am on my way to get three!

The Best in Mystery

This series takes you back in time and gives the viewer a glance at the lives people lead in Britian during the Second World War. The mysteries are well written, but what makes this special is the window to the past.
