Series 3 of the Masterpiece Theatre import Foyle's War finds Hastings Detective Chief Superintendent Christopher Foyle Michael Kitchen once again up to his ears in domestic intrigue while WWII rages on across the English Channel. The program, created by Poirot writer Anthony Horowitz, served up four 100-minute mysteries in this run, which debuted over Britain's ITV network in November 2004 before airing in the U.S. in September and October 2005. Set in the winter of 1941, Series 3 begins with "The French Drop," which finds Foyle looking beyond Hastings for work, but becoming embroiled in a murder investigation that involves some nasty players from a top-secret spy organization. Surgeon Patrick Jamieson Bill Paterson commandeers Digby Manor sets to set up a pioneering burn unit "Enemy Fire," and calls in Foyle when it seems someone is sabotaging the operation. When unpopular RAF mechanic Gordon Drake Shaun Dooley turns up dead, and Foyle's pilot son Andrew Julian Ovenden goes missing, it's up to Foyle and his team -- Sam Honeysuckle Weeks and Paul Anthony Howell -- to sort things out. Foyle and Milner capture two German airmen who crash land in the Hastings countryside, setting "They Fought in the Fields" in motion. Soon, a farmer is found murdered, another German parachutist is found stuck in a tree with his pistol missing, and Foyle begins to unravel a web of secrets and lies involving the various rural characters. Finally, "War of Nerves" affords Foyle and Milner a crack at an organized crime ring. After a bombing raid at the shipyard, thousands of pounds of cash is discovered by Royal Engineers, one of whom is caught trying to smuggle the loot out. Foyle's less concerned with the opportunistic pilferer than he is with the booty's source, though, and begins an investigation. This 4-disc set includes a making of documentary and cast reflections.

    superb, history and mystery

The Foyle's War series is an interesting, excellently done take on the mystery genre. The series is murder and more, it's also history, a look at life on the British homefront during the early dark years or World War II. It is well cast, Michael Kitchen, Honeysuckle Weeks and Anthony Horovitch operate together like a well oiled machine. This is a series to sit back and savor with a good cup of tea. The production values are top notch.
