I was completely spoiled by the original Foyle's War series, which was magnificent. Not only the stories, but the wonderful interplay of characters. The new series is awful. The stories are contrived, and the characters have lost their magic. Although Michael Kitchen is wonderful, as always, in this series, he appears that his heart is not in it, and that he is, "just going through the motions." Sam has been transformed from a sweet, wonderful girl, to practically a shrew. She no longer has the fresh quality she had, but is now an annoying meddling woman, who is not really likeable. Milner is truly missed as well. Overall, I wish I had reviewed the series when it aired on PBS before ordering the DVDs. They never know when to bring something great to its natural conclusion. I guess it is true, that we can never go home again.

I agree with the previous review that the new episodes are not as good as the original series.  That being said, I am still glad I watched them and will purchase the DVDs for my collection.  The story lines are somewhat complex.  Both Foyle and Sam seem jaded, but given what the world had been through it is understandable.  Their characters are changed, but so do people in real life.
