Frank Zappa: Does Humor Belong in Music?

( 3 )

Overview

Despite the fact that, upon picking up the Frank Zappa: Does Humor Belong in Music? DVD, sharp-eyed Zappa fans will immediately notice that it is indeed not an official Honker Home Video release, EMI Home Video has done quite a commendable job in presenting this fun 1984 concert. Presented in 1.33:1 full-frame, the image is actually pretty impressive for a shot-on-video concert from 1984. The colors are well balanced, the image clear, and the production value appears to be fairly high. Sound is offered only in ...

Sound is offered only in PCM Stereo, though it is remarkably clear and free of any hints of distortion or hiss. It's a well-mixed track that has held up nicely. Extras on the DVD are absolutely nil, but fans will likely just be pleased to see one of the 20th century's true musical visionaries back on-stage and belting out some of his most popular tunes.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
Originally released in 1985 on VHS, the songs on this concert recording were culled from Frank Zappa's 1984 tour. As the title suggests, the focus here remains on Zappa's lighthearted material, characterized by "Dancing Fool," the 1979 song that is one of his all-time biggest hits. The selections, though, include numbers from his early work with the Mothers of Invention and his later solo compositions, and boasts the first-ever live recording of "Hot Plate Heaven at the Green Hotel."

    Frankly...The BEST

This concert was typical of FZ's love for the audiences in NYC. He always felt most accepted in the city and played some of his best works there. This video is well shot and shows all band members contributions
