Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Franklin is a class act, as is this heartwarming and reassuring 48-minute episode from the award-winning series based on Paulette Bourgeoisin's books. For Franklin and his animal friends, things are getting "different," as the joy of summer gives way to excitement over the new school year and apprehension over the new motor scooter-riding substitute teacher, Miss Koala. Franklin, especially, is slow to adapt to the no-nonsense Koala and the changes in the classroom routine. A respectful bond is fostered as the class learns more about Koala, her native Australia, and her soccer expertise. She forms the class into a team and gives Franklin the confidence to try being a goalie. Meanwhile, there are other changes: Franklin's sister initiates a friendship with a shy new playmate; his parents reap an autumn harvest and prepare their garden for winter; and Franklin finds that he may be too old for his beloved blanket (which he thoughtfully gives to his sister). Insightfully written, Back to School deserves high marks for keeping it real, as evidenced by the fact that the soccer team does not win its big game.
