Fred Rogers: America's Favorite Neighbor

( 2 )

Overview

The loss of perennial children's television favorite Fred Rogers left a hole in the hearts of many Americans that could never be filled by the likes of the Teletubbies or Barney the Dinosaur. Rogers was a gentle, soft-spoken "neighbor" whose constant sense of wonder and innocence shone a positive ray of bright light on a medium that seems to grow less kid-friendly with each passing hour. His timeless lessons of learning and sharing are looked back upon by actor (and former Mister Rogers' Neighborhood crew member)...

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Some people use their access to the airwaves to broadcast gross. For 50 years, Fred Rogers used his oasis in the broadcasting day to broadcast grace. This warm and wonderful tribute to Mr. Rogers takes its cue from the man himself. It is affectionate and sincere without being the least bit cloying and sentimental. Michael Keaton, who as a young actor appeared on Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, hosts this Parents' Choice Award-winning commemorative collection of cherished memories. Keaton revisits all the touchstones of a typical Neighborhood episode and introduces memorable clips of Rogers, including his appearances on The Tonight Show, with humbled guest host Joan Rivers, and his stirring 1969 congressional testimony in favor of saving public television. Among the cooler finds here is a half-hour, black-and-white documentary originally broadcast on the series Creative Person, in the 1960s and wow does it look it!. Over the course of 900 episodes, Rogers helped children constructively express themselves emotionally and creatively. He offered them a safe haven where they could feel accepted and loved. He took them behind the scenes to see how such wonders as pretzels are made. Rogers, Keaton observes, devoted his life to using television to "soothe the soul, nurture the spirit, and teach the very young." This disc's extras, too, are a testament to Rogers' legacy. Among the archival clips are Rogers sharing his nurturing and reassuring philosophy with a respectful Arsenio Hall and receiving a Lifetime Achievement Emmy Award and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor. Parents who grew up with Mr. Rogers will enjoy this return to the Neighborhood, and a new generation will get some idea of just how much they are missing.

    Mister Rogers' Blessing

Grab the tissues one and all. You are taken on a trolley ride through childhood memories that could only be made by this angel of a man. We are blessed to have had this angel for so long. He taught us so much about who we are and who we could become. Thank you, Mister Fred Rogers
