With a powerful cast including Samuel L. Jackson, Julianne Moore, and Edie Falco, and a hard-hitting screenplay from Richard Price (adapting his own novel), the underrated Freedomland practically dares you to confront the divisive issues it addresses. When single mother Brenda Martin (Moore) is carjacked in a poor African-African community in New Jersey, police detective Lorenzo Council (Jackson) is assigned to the case. His investigation takes on urgency when the distraught Brenda reveals that her young son was in the car. A protracted search reveals no clues, and as it appears less likely that the boy will be found alive, racial tensions escalate, with Lorenzo caught in the middle. Price's script doesn't hew to typical thriller formula; considerable ambiguity marks both the plot and the fully dimensional characters. Director Joe Roth ratchets up the suspense even more by emphasizing a vaguely supernatural element of the proceedings and offering up some startling surprises in the film's second half. Pervasively downbeat yet mesmerizing, Freedomland definitely marches to the beat of a different drum. These days, that's a strong recommendation.

    Terrible - Don't bother

    With so many great and entertaining movies (old and new) to see, don't waste your time with this one. The race relations issue is presented in scenes of graphic, explosive emotion and violence. Haven't we made more progress than THIS in all these years? If we haven't, then we are all doing something very wrong and that doesn't speak well for our society. Although the worst Samuel L. Jackson performance is still GREAT, his charisma and acting prowess and depth are wasted here: his character is always in the same desperate, racing mode from being one step behind "the bad guys". One bright spot was Edie Falco's touching and poignant performance.
