French Connection

Overview

Twentieth Century Fox keeps coming on strong with the DVD release of The French Connection in an excellent two-disc set. The first disc contains the feature, which looks great after 30 years. Presented in an anamorphic widescreen format with a 1.85:1 aspect ratio, the stark, grainy colors of New York's seamy side come through with amazing clarity. The film also carries a pleasant Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack. Also on the first disc is a commentary from director William Friedkin. While he often provides some ...

While he often provides some interesting tidbits about the film, he spends some time simply describing what's happening onscreen. Still, it's obvious he knows this film well, and hearing his thoughts on it is worth one's time. Actors Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider provide an alternate commentary track. Disc two contains the extras which include a spectacular pair of documentaries and a host of deleted scenes. These scenes can be watched separately or as part of a documentary where Friedkin explains why they were excised. Additionally, the disc offers trailers for The French Connection and The French Connection II. This disc set is a worthy treatment for such a landmark film and should find its way into any serious film buff's library.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Richard Gilliam
The French Connection became the blueprint for many action films that followed and, as such, is regarded among the most influential films of its era. Oscar winner Gene Hackman plays the prototype psycho cop, overly dedicated to results even when it means disregarding public safety and common sense. His partner (Roy Scheider) is the good cop counterpart, and they are constantly at war with each other, with the bad guys, or, more commonly, both. Unlike Lethal Weapon and other films it influenced, The French Connection has more street realism and a generally unhappy ending. The dialogue is intelligent, and the film features one of the most riveting automobile chase scenes of its era, rivaled only by the legendary stunt work in Vanishing Point. Overall, the film captured five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director (William Friedkin).

    Great cop movie.

The paranoid, and electric tale of one cop who wont let up. Gene Hackman's acting of Popeye Doyle was outstanding, and not to mention probably the best car chase I have ever seen in a move, a must have and see.
