Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Bill Pearis
Easily one of the best new shows of the 2006-7 season, NBC's Friday Night Lights defied the expectations and stereotypes associated with most sports dramas. Thanks to the wealth of memorable characters, great writing, and pitch-perfect performances, you don't even have to like football to become engrossed in the goings-on in Dillon, Texas, a town singularly devoted to supporting its local high school team. It's a transitional year for the Dillon Panthers, with all eyes on new coach Eric Taylor Kyle Chandler and second-string quarterback Matt Saracen Zach Gilford, who must step up when the team's star, Jason Street Scott Porter, is injured in the season's opening game. The Panthers' other star players are running back Brian "Smash" Williams Gaius Charles, whose natural ability rivals his ego, and fullback Tim Riggins Taylor Kitsch, who seems more interested in partying than football. Representing the town's interest is booster Buddy Garrity Brad Leland, a sleazy car dealer who is willing to do anything to make sure the Panthers win, and whose daughter, Lyla Minka Kelly, heads the cheerleading squad. As gripping as the gridiron action is, it's the off-field drama and that really makes the show worth watching. In particular, the relationship between Coach Taylor and his wife, Tami Connie Britton, is worthy of a show in itself. The two are so natural together, it hardly seems like they're acting. Both should've been nominated for Emmys, especially Britton. Equally winning is the budding courtship -- in equal parts sweet, awkward, and funny -- between the Taylors' smart, football-hating daughter, Julie Aimee Teegarden, and the shy Saracen. Executive producer Peter Berg, who adapted Buzz Bissinger's 1990 bestseller about high school football in rural Texas for his 2003 hit film also called Friday Night Lights, brings the same low-key sensibility and documentary feel to the series -- as well as the evocative score by instrumental rock band Explosions in the Sky. The result is a show that looks and feels unlike anything else on broadcast television, allowing real issues racism, religion, politics, alcohol and steroid abuse to be as complex as they really are, and taking many wonderful, unexpected turns as the Panthers head toward the state championship finale.

    May The Lights Shine On!

It is a unique situation where a show that is truly one of the best on the air, and one of the most overlooked continues to stay on the network schedule.

Thank you to the executives at Direct-TV who rescued it from certain cancellation.

The show proves that you don't have to be a cop or a lawyer - you simply have to be alive - to find the drama and the comedy that makes life so intriguing.

A show about football that's one of the best dramas on TV? C'mon, really?

I never watched this series when it aired on TV because I was immediately put off by the "high school football team does stuff in a small Texas town." Yawn. I don't care for sports. Then I watched it, and I was pleasantly surprised. Of course there's football, but you really forget about that when you're watching the characters. You get emotionally involved with everyone's lives, to say the least. The relationship between the Taylor family is one of the most honest on TV. Connie Britton really should have been nominated for an Emmy. She's wonderful.

    My Favorite Show!

This show is stuffed with plenty of witty dialog and compelling drama, and realistically portrays a town where winning really is everything. When the star QB is asked by a younger player if he thinks God loves football, he replies as though it were obvious: "I think everybody loves football." It has something for everyone. I can't believe more people don't watch it!

Fantastic, underrated show that no one is watching...

This is a great show that I heard about through word of mouth. I confess that I know nothing about football, but it doesn't matter. The show is about the families, relationships, and conflicts around the sport. The acting is believable and the writing top notch; sometimes you feel as if you're watching a documentary.

I bought season 1 about a week ago and I'm almost done watching it. That's how good it is. You owe it to yourself to watch the show, if you like genuinely good tv.

    How come no reviews?

This show is amazing. How can there be no reviews for it? It's the best show nobody is watching. It doesn't rely on convoluted plot lines or twists and turns (although Heroes and Lost have their place in my TV heart). It's just real, and the chemistry between the characters is breathtaking, especially between Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton. Please watch this show!

    It's not just about football.

This show really is amazingly good. I don't even like football, but I love the show. I think people hate being told it's the best show that they aren't watching. All I can say is, give it a chance. Watch the pilot online, and see if you're hooked. Then buy the whole season 1 and catch up.

For some reason, conservatives hate this show

For some reason, this show is only watched by effete, upper class, tea drinkers like myself, who is ironic, since its a sincere celebration of community, family, and the redemptive power of team sports, set in the most sympathetic depiction of the south this southerner has ever seen.

You may think "I don't like football, therefore I won't like this show." You would be wrong.
