Fright Night

Overview

Columbia/Tri-Star's DVD release of this 1985 cult horror favorite features a clean-looking, crisp-sounding transfer of the film, but remains a let-down thanks to a lack of special features. Beyond simply owning this great horror-comedy in the DVD format, the only real reasons to purchase this version is to see the letterboxed version of the film (in its original 2.35: 1 aspect ratio) on side one and to be able to hear the heavily '80s-influenced soundtrack in Dolby Surround Sound (English track only). ...

Unfortunately, those are all the extras this disc has to offer unless you've been dying to catch the film in French or Portuguese. The lone addition is the original theatrical trailer which gives away most of the film's ending. The picture quality is excellent and Richard Edlund's special effects are captured in the ideal technological display. Side two also features the full-screen version of the film for those averse to letterboxing.

All Movie Guide
Tom Holland perfectly blends horror and comedy in this popular, well-made send-up of the old "Chiller Theater"-style horror shows that could be found on late-night television in the 1960s and '70s. Holland's screenplay doesn't try to be fancy. Instead, he concocts the simple, suspenseful story of a teen who discovers an awful secret -- that his next-door neighbor is a vampire -- and then lets his actors take care of the rest. William Ragsdale does an excellent job playing the frazzled teen protagonist, while Chris Sarandon takes full advantage of his role as the ultra-evil blood-sucker. Amanda Bearse and Stephen Geoffreys also turn in solid supporting turns as Ragsdale's girlfriend and best friend, respectively, but it is Roddy McDowall who steals the show. Playing the part of aging horror host Peter Vincent (named for Peter Cushing and Vincent Price) who comes to Ragsdale's rescue, McDowall really seems to enjoy himself in the meaty role whether he's pretending to be the "great vampire killer" of his character's movie roles or just plain running scared from Sarandon's nasty vampire. From a technical perspective, Fright Night maintains a chilling, uneasy atmosphere thanks to the great haunted-house setting of the vampire's lair in which the bulk of the film's scariest scenes occur. The special makeup effects by Richard Edlund are well-done with particular acclaim reserved for the fantastic slaying of the vampire's day-walking helper (played by Jonathan Stark). Even the effects-filled finale doesn't come close to this incredible sequence. Bearse's vampire look is outlandish, but disturbing thanks to its clownish mouth full of teeth. The costumes, makeup, and soundtrack date this film a bit to its 1980s roots, as they are heavily influenced by the styles and sounds of the decade. The J. Geils Band performs the title track. McDowall and Ragsdale reprised their roles in the 1989 sequel Fright Night Part II.

    Welcome to Fright Night

One of my favorite things about the month of October is it gives me the excuse to watch all my favorite scary movies all at one time. Well not really at one time, but you get the point.

This classic vampire film from 1985 isn't all that scary (anymore) but it is one of my favorite movies to watch once the weather starts to get a little colder and the nights start arriving earlier.

    Synopsis From Back Cover:

Meet Jerry Dandridge. He's sweet, sexy, and he likes to sleep in late. You might think he's the perfect neighbor. But before inviting Jerry in for a nightcap, there's just one thing you should know. Jerry prefers his drinks warm, red - and straight from the jugular! It's Fright Night, a horrific howl starring Chris Sarandon as the seductive vampire and William Ragsdale as the frantic teenager struggling to keep Jerry's deadly fangs our of his neck. Only 17-year old Charley Brewster (Ragsdale) knows Jerry's bloodcurdling secret. When Charley can't get anybody to believe him, he turns to TV horror host Peter Vincent (Roddy McDowall), who used to be the "Great Vampire Killer" of the movies. Can these mortals save Charley and his sweetheart Amy (Amanda Bearse) from the wrathful bloodsucker's toothy embrace?

The synopsis never even mentions Charley's best friend "Evil" Ed Thompson. He is probably one of the most annoying but funny characters to grace the silver screen. He is played by Stephen Geoffreys and is such a complete spaz that you can't but help love him while he is stealing scenes from his costars. Once he is turned into a vampire by Jerry Dandridge he gets even funnier. You almost feel sorry for him once he has his final showdown with Peter Vincent.

The other character I love in this movie is that of Peter Vincent. Played by the wonderful Roddy McDowall, Peter is the perfect combination of intrepid vampire hunter and washed up actor. The clips of his own movies are hilarious to watch and remind me of the old Hammer horror movies. I would hope they got the name Peter from Peter Cushing who starred as a vampire hunter in many of those movies.

So all I can say is for those of you who have never seen this movie, I implore you to watch it. For those of you who have watched it before, I ask that you give it another screening.
