    Fun and clever sci-fi

I've heard a lot of people dismiss Fringe by saying that it's just a rip-off of The X-Files, and as an x-phile, myself, I can certainly see the parallels. There are weird cases with unexplained phenomena. There's a deeper, greater mystery behind those cases. And a man and a woman are investigating them. (Which, honestly, you can hardly count as a parallel, since just about every crime/mystery show out there these days has a man-woman team doing the investigating.)

Beyond these similarities, though, Fringe stands on its own. The weird cases fit inside the show's greater mystery in a way that The X-Files monster-of-the-week episodes did not. A parallel universe is the threat, not aliens. And the show works with its premise in imaginative and constantly surprising ways. I love the characters and I'm interested in seeing how they and the storyline develop as the show continues.

If the X-Files Had Taken LSD...

The parallels between Fringe and the X-Files are obvious as are the 15 odd years between when the two show were made. Fringe is everything the X-Files wanted to be, but 1990s television wouldn't allow. Our resident FBI agents (Dunham, Francis) are thrown into a weird world of the unexplained, and deal with it. There is nothing like Scully's continuing, unreasonable scepticism (after 5 seasons, you STILL don't think anything weird is going on?!?). This status quo changes, the characters relationships evolve, the weird stuff just keeps getting weirder, and in no way backs down from the weirdness. Fringe also has very good characters, suprisingly good special effects and an intriguing meta-plot. It occasionally suffers from "Monster of the Week" syndrome, but when a character is exposed to the weirdness, they don't get brainwashed, or convienently rendered unconcious, or simply disbelieve it since "that's not possible". This first season was great, and I'm looking forward to season two.

    Excellent Show!

Interesting science fiction with characters you care about. The show has come together so beautifully, both in the story lines and in character development. John Noble is the best mad scientist as Dr. Walter Bishop. Also, lots of good extras on the DVDs. I love this show!

I absolutely love this tv show! The storyline keeps you on your toes and the science they come up with is completely fascinating! I love going back and watching previous episodes because there is always something new to notice and they never get old!

    Interesting and Intriguing Series

This show captures some of the feel and imagination from the X-Files and places things in a new millenium perspective. The acting is solid and the storyline intriguing. And the show is aptly titled - "Fringe" is a good descriptor for the situations and events that define the show from week to week. My only criticism of the series is that the overall plot line does not develop as quickly as I would like, and there are some weeks where the plot line moves forward at all. Nevertheless, it is a highly entertaining show that I hope will continue as a FOX primetime offering for several seasons.
