MGM has tried their best to clean up this 1.85:1 anamrophic print, though excessive grain, dirt, and imperfections abound. However, considering the source and time period Fritz the Cat was produced in, this can be somewhat overlooked. A small amount of edge enhancement is spotted in a few key scenes, though otherwise the color schemes and black levels look generally even and solid. Audio is presented in a very flat sounding Dolby 1.0 Mono soundtrack in both English and French. Some distortion is present during a few scenes, though overall the dialogue, effects, and colorful music are clear of any major defects. Also included on this disc are English, French, and Spanish subtitles. Those hoping for a "special edition" of Fritz the Cat will be sorely disappointed; the only extra feature available on this disc is a theatrical trailer presented in anamorphic widescreen.

Irreverent, psychedelic and adventurous, Fritz the Cat was the first X-rated cartoon feature. Created by the infamous animator Ralph Bakshi and based on a character by famed underground artist R. Crumb, Fritz was a surprising cult hit on the midnight movie circuit and at drive-ins. Though it may seem dated after the explosion of Japanese animation in the 1980s, the film successfully captured the early 1970s disillusionment with the free-love era. It also happened to hit the screens in the midst of the brief "porno-chic" movement, when X-rated movies such as Deep Throat and The Devil in Miss Jones made "dirty" moviegoing experiences socially acceptable. Crumb objected to Fritz the Cat being made into a movie, but Bakshi and schlock producer Steve Krantz got permission from Crumb's wife without his knowledge. Bakshi, who was best known for working on TV cartoons like Deputy Dawg and Hekyll and Jekyll, went on to make a number of less well-received animated features. Fritz the Cat was followed by an almost impossibly bad sequel, The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat.

    Fritz 'Scores' Big With Sex Crazed Teens and Adults!

    Fritz the Cat is an epic film of drugs, sex, hilarity, and violence that made me laugh so hard I might've died. Fritz the Cat is a stoner who wants good sex, good drugs,and a better time! When his friend Duke is killed in a shootout he runs away from the cops cross country and has an odd journey ahead of him, with his tripped out girl, I would not let my kids see this, if I were you. It contains sex related comedy, drug content, language, drug content, AND SEX RELATED COMEDY! I had to mention drug content and sex related comedy twice, this is a good and bad film. Good because it's funny and weird, and bad for the kids.
