From Russia with Love

Overview

Shot in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio instead of 2.35:1, From Russia With Love might not offer the visual punch of some of its predecessors on DVD, but it still looks better than it ever has before. The film print shows its age occasionally, but the overall increase in picture quality is a welcome improvement. There's plenty to learn about the film from the commentary, though due to the film's age, it has to rely largely on outdated interview segments and star anecdotes. The documentaries are almost always the best ...

The documentaries are almost always the best supplement on the Bond DVDs, as "Inside From Russia With Love" proves. The series was still very young at this point, so there is a wealth of interesting information about the development of the series. The second and less engaging featurette, "Harry Saltzman: Showman," gives a short biography of one of the series' original producers. In addition to the usual collection of trailers and radio spots, the DVD includes a short "animated" storyboard sequence that displays the original scheme for the boat finale compared to the finished footage. While the DVD of From Russia With Love might get lost in the shadow of more popular Bond films, it still remains one of the essential releases in the series.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
Perhaps the definitive James Bond film, From Russia with Love firmly established the series' now-familiar combination of outrageous action, femme fatales, fantastic gadgetry, and tongue-in-cheek suavity. Sean Connery deepens his Bond characterization, imbuing the persona with the smirky confidence that future audiences would come to expect. Director Terence Young's climactic showdown is one of the best action sequences of its kind, with thrilling combat choreography and expert editing. Though Dr. No may have been the first Bond film, Russia marked the inaugural appearance of the hip, flashy credit sequence, as well as Desmond Llewelyn in the role of Q. All in all, Russia is one of the sharpest entries in the perennially popular franchise.

From Russia With Love is a moive that you can watch over and over again.
Connery at his best. The villian Red Grant is spetacular. Starting with
stealing the Lector, to the train fight, then the helicopter with the
gernades, to the boat chase is filled with action. Makes the book easier
to understand. One of the best songs and good supporting characters.

    From Russia With Love

Best of the Bond Movies - Sean Connery was simply superb as James Bond. All of the actors gave wonderful performances. The first Bond movies had great scripts and contained drama, excitement and humor. Writers didn't need to blow up everything and everyone in sight to keep people engaged and entertained. Russia With Love is sung beautifully by Matt Monro!

    more from this reviewer

I'ts Connerys Favorite, and the Best.

After recently watching the debacle that was Quantum of Solace, I had to return to what a Bond movie should be. From Russia with Love, the second in the franchise, establishes the foundation for all that follows. The theme, The chase music, the opening song, the gadgets, and the best plot of any Bond movie. There is a hierarchy of villians, and the SPECTRE's enforcer is played by Robert Shaw, who is as menacing as Connery is suave; their fight on the Orient Express took three weeks to film, and it is a brutal match. The setting is Istanbul, no more exotic and familiar place on Earth, from the Grand Bazaar to Hagia Sophia to the Basilica Cistern underneath. The film ends in Venice, a perfect bookend. We also get to meet SPECTRE's #1, Ernst Stavro Blofeld, and of course, the accesory of every super villain, a white cat to stroke as he schemes.

    From Russia With Love

Many people say that Goldfinger was the film that made the James Bond series what it is today. But, for me that isn't the case. I loved From Russia With Love. I think, in my own opinion, that this was truely Sean Connery's best performance as Bond. I loved the way Daniela Bianchi played Tatiana Romanova as the same for Lotte Lenya as Rosa Klebb. Even though this movie is different than Ian Fleming's original Bond novel, it is still one of the Best Bond films.

    ''COMPLETLY PHENOMINAL''

The first minute gets your mind thinking really hard right off the bat. It stimulates the mind. It involves state-of-the-art gadgetry, hot bond girls, and ultimate action throughout the whole movie. I gave this film a perfect 5 stars because it's the #1 hit of all bond films! The story is exceptionally good and it never gets boring. This film also includes a great chase too, that's the signiture part of a bond film. Overall it's a terrific film and I hope to see more 007 films like that one.

    Excellent for its era

I loved this video, especially Lotte Lenya as Col. Klebb, and the action and scenery is wonderful, for one who does NOT think Connery was the best Bond.
