Frost/Nixon - The Original Watergate Interviews

( 10 )

Overview

This program, culled from the over 28 hours of interview footage between British TV host David Frost and former U.S. President Richard M. Nixon, was originally broadcast in May of 1977. The Frost/Nixon interviews -- which inspired the 2006 Peter Morgan play (adapted into film by Ron Howard in 2008) -- remain a TV landmark both for the extent of the source tapes and the striking lack of preconditions for the discussions: Nixon agreed to appear on camera with no pre-interview preparation or screening of questions. ...

The series of programs ran six hours, and this final segment, focused solely on Watergate, runs 88 minutes. This DVD also contains new footage with Sir David Frost (knighted in for his contributions to British broadcasting in 1993) shot in 2007 discussing the historical impact of the interview along with his recollections from their encounters.

    I Also Recommend:

Watergate: straight from the horse's a**

I haven't seen the Frost/Nixon movie but hearing from the "Tricky Dick" and David Frost would be honestly more engaging than hearing than those who "embody" the men themselves. Frost actually asks the questions and Nixon actually answers but he doesn't really. Getting Nixon to admit a legal form of guilt for Watergate is impossible. But "letting the country down and end of political career" are the best Frost and the American people can hope for. After the interview, Frost gives us the 18 month details between the interview contract being signed to Nixon's reaction after the interviews were broadcast.

I recommend this to anyone who are aware of the cast of characters otherwise the names Ogarrio, Colson, Ehrlichmann, Haldeman, Dean, Herbert Kalmbach, Gen. Walters(CIA), and Richard M. Nixon are going to be a little confusing. I wholeheartedly recommend the L. Patrick Gray book, In Nixon's Web as a primer; then those names will all make sense.

The direction should be immensely credited.

At first, one might think that this is an actor's movie. Heading the list of excellent actors are Michael Sheen and Frank Langella. Both of thes actors did a marvelous job as David Frost and Richard Nixon, respectively. Serious credit must also be given to Matthew Macfadyen, Sam Rockwell, James Reston Jr., Toby Jones, Wallace Langham and Kevin Bacon.

And Screenwriter Peter Morgan has written a smart and complete screenplay.

However, in Frost/Nixon, where 70s, talk show star, David Frost, sets up an interview with former President Richard Nixon, with the goal of getting a confession from Nixon for Watergate, director Ron Howard translates this play into an engrossingly entertaining movie. Howard handles the difficult task of a "talky" picture with great skill.

Exciting and stirring, Frost/Nixon comes off as a thrilling as drama.

Finally got to watch this interview

I was a teenager when this interview originally aired in 1977 and didn't watch it at the time. With this DVD, I was finally able to see it and certainly was not disappointed. To Nixon's credit, he went into the interview without preconditions or prior knowledge of the questions to be asked of him which makes for interesting viewing - especially to watch his reactions to questions. I have mixed feelings about Richard Nixon but there's no denying that he was a big part of American politics in the twentieth century. I believe another DVD or DVD set is to be released in 2009 with the rest of the 1977 Nixon/Frost interview for which I will be eagerly awaiting.
