Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Cree McCree
"The Simpsons is fictional. Futurama is real." Thus spake Matt Groening, creator of both Fox animated series. In fact, while Springfield's ostensibly normal citizens often launch into wildly surreal adventures, the outrageous alien life forms of Futurama's sly dystopia have not yet evolved beyond sleazy politicians and annoying roommates. The release of this bonus feature-filled three-disc set, which includes four episodes that were held back until Season 2, is a fine consolation prize for the more than 150,000 fans who signed a virtual petition to keep the show on the air, unsuccessfully. Newcomers, meanwhile, can see what they've missed. Our human stand-in is Fry, a cryogenically frozen pizza delivery boy who thaws out in A.D. 3000 and becomes an intergalactic delivery boy (albeit a very rich one, with 1,000 years of accrued interest on his paltry savings account). Teamed with Cyclopean bombshell Leela and boozy robot Bender, Fry boldly goes deep into the dysfunctions of the 31st century, where Leonard Nimoy and Pamela Anderson live on as disembodied heads. Sci-fi fans will lap up every clever homage, from Sleeper to Blade Runner to Lost in Space. Simpsons devotees will appreciate the Homer-like Bender. And anyone who roots for lovable underdogs can't help but fall for Fry, who squanders his fortune on a can of anchovies and inadvertently drinks the leader of a liquid race.

To all fans, read the following message. All of people here love Futurama, but will you be willing to save it. June 19th is the shows eighth and FINAL season. I know its a spoiler on this season one DVD, but still. So write, rally, and Email. Please, save this dysfunctional "family".

Futurama is a great show featuring what I would call cynical comedy. Certain people futurama's jokes outrageously funny (like my self), but others find them to be inside jokes. Each episode is in conjunction with the last one, if you skip the first season you will not understand the jokes and story line for the following episodes. Male viewers in their early teens have been the largest part of the audience for Futurama in the USA. This is a great offer, one the would be a mistake to pass up, but remember, only buy this if you have either like other Matt Groening shows such as The Simpsons. This DVD set is an ode to Futurama in its truest form, and a great set of episodes.

Futrama is one of the most funniest shows ever(i.e. when the group has to go inside Fry's body and kill off worms that live inside his stomach they end up fighting there way into a castle when they lose Dr.Zoidberg and out of no-where he comes out riding a sperm like a horse and shouting out you'll never guess where i've been.) Truly a timeless moment in t.v. So in Short people that love to laugh must get this Dvd of the first season of Futurama i know i will.

I caught this show on the Cartoon Network actually and ever since then I've been hooked. The show cracks me up. I love Fry and Zap Brannigan's character. My favorite episode is when they are held prisoners in an Island with only Amazonian women and sentenced to death by sex. It was hysterical. I can't wait for Volume Two.

Futurama stands as one of the most underated comedic television shows of all time. Viewing this DVD will have you laughing out loud and wishing that Fox had not canceled the program. I laughed, I cried, a took a short break to go to the bathroom, and then laughed some more.

Someone said that you have to watch every episode to understand the jokes. I don't agree. I think picking up any episode, you will find yourself laughing out loud at it. I'm sad that they cancelled this snow, but I get to enjoy it every night on Cartoon Network.

When CBS brainlessly banned Reidsville Adventures in January 1990, it is unfortunate there were no protestors and picket signs (maybe there were). For years afterwards, fans of the Saturday morning cartoon were completely at a loss. Until now, that is. This DVD collection encompasses the entire first season - a total of 12 episodes - in all its original glory, no censorship, no added pretension, just Reidsville Adventures being itself. Especially recommended are the political episodes, such as the one dealing with the election of Bush Sr. in 1988, a 'sad day for freedom' in the eyes of the Reidsville Adventures crew. Also great for those who are not skilled in the ways of Axen, Jebbinghouse, Jade, and the others, to help introduce them to the wonderful world of R.V.A.
