Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
The saga of Matt Groening's sophomore effort, Futurama, comes to an end with the show's final Volume 4 collection. Though critically lauded, Futurama was woefully bounced around Fox's schedule and often preempted, but fans can now watch all 18 episodes of the fourth production season in order. Only 3 of these episodes were actually broadcast during the show's fourth season in 2002, the remainder airing during the fifth and final season. The Planet Express crew -- Fry (Billy West), Leela (Katey Sagal), and Bender (John DiMaggio) -- remain full of surprises, such as when they endeavor to make peace with an aggressive alien planet by delivering Valentine's Day candy ("Love and Rocket"). As with Groening's The Simpsons, even some of the funniest episodes offer tender moments. "Kif Gets Knocked Up a Notch" explores the nature of human/alien dating when Kif becomes pregnant, forcing Amy to make some hard decisions about their relationship. In the heartwarming "Leela's Homeworld," an event at the "Orphanarium" leads Leela to finally learn the truth about her parents. "The Why of Fry" deals with alternate dimensions, time-travel, and Fry's love for Leela. And in the surprisingly touching "Jurassic Bark," a 2003 Emmy nominee, Fry's dog, Seymour, is found fossilized at an archaeological dig in 1999 New York, allowing Fry to discover just how much his canine buddy loved him. Of course, Futurama still does comedy best, and the absolute highlight of the collection is "Where No Fan Has Gone Before," an animated love letter to Star Trek fans, as Fry travels to a planet to retrieve the original Star Trek tapes banned on 31st-century Earth and encounters the original Trek crew (William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, and others supply their voices). Although short-lived, Futurama will no doubt gain in stature in the years ahead, thanks in part to this wonderful set, which offers commentaries on every episode, deleted scenes, and much more.
