It’s probably very hard for young movie fans to imagine what earlier generations saw in this alluring but enigmatic Swedish-born star of the silent and early sound eras. Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
It’s probably very hard for young movie fans to imagine what earlier generations saw in this alluring but enigmatic Swedish-born star of the silent and early sound eras. Greta Garbo was a striking woman and an effective actress, but even at her warmest and most outgoing she seemed remote and inaccessible. Indeed, her appeal was lost on some Depression-era audiences, to whom her smoky beauty and husky voice meant little; yet she was a great favorite of more sophisticated moviegoers, and her home studio, MGM, lavished great care on her glossy star vehicles. Warner Home Video has collected the best of them in this box set, which also includes a perceptive documentary on the legendary, reclusive actress. The films include The Temptress 1926, Flesh and the Devil 1927, The Mysterious Lady 1928, Anna Christie 1930, Grand Hotel 1932, Mata Hari 1932, Queen Christina 1933, Anna Karenina 1935, Camille 1937, and Ninotchka 1939. Each one of these films is worth buying if you’re a fan of classic Hollywood drama, but the bona fide standouts are Clarence Brown’s Flesh and the Devil, in which slinky seductress Garbo comes between old friends John Gilbert and Lars Hanson; Edmund Goulding’s Grand Hotel, an all-star offering featuring her as a lonely ballerina in a luxurious Berlin hostelry; Rouben Mamoulian’s Queen Christina, a beautifully filmed period drama that re-teams Garbo with matinee idol and former offscreen lover Gilbert; and Billy Wilder’s Ninotchka, which attempted -- too late -- to soften Garbo’s image by casting her as a cold, efficient Soviet functionary who warms up considerably after being exposed to happy-go-lucky playboy Melvyn Douglas in romantic Paris.

    Garbo the great

It is really not hard at all for modern audiences to understand Garbo's appeal today (as the Barnes and Nobles review of this item states!). This wonderful dvd box, a magnificent tribute to the artistry of the Divine Garbo reminds us of Garbo's versatility and magic gifts as an actress. Her range, often contrary to legend, as we can testify from the films in the dvd box is indeed extraordinary : heartbreaking and yet such a noble and full of light touch "Dame aux Camelias" in Camille, a fascinating androgynous Christina, a sensuous femme-fatale in "Flesh and the Devil", a worn out yet generous prostitute in her first talkie "Anna Christie" (you get a rare chance to compare the amrican version with the german version of the film that Garbo made with Jacques Feyder), delightful in "Ninotschka" her first comedy, captivating in "Mata Hari". Garbo a 100 years after her death remains the greatest of all screen actresses, the most beautiful, the most fascinating. We do understand her appeal fully, do not worry!!!
