Set in 18th Century England, it follows the experiences of William Garrow (Andrew Buchan), a tempestuous attorney trying various criminal cases of the day. Though the concepts of "innocent until proven guilty" and individual liberty are entirely novel at the time, Garrow coins both principles and helps to make them rote, often successfully defending the unjustly accused against the state. Unsurprisingly, this earns him numerous enemies in the fields of law and politics. His main nemesis, however, is Sir Arthur Hill (Rupert Graves), who believes that Garrow is having an affair with his wife, Lady Sarah (Lyndsey Marshal).
