Gay Sex in the '70s

Overview

In 1969, the Stonewall riots in New York City sounded the opening bell of the Gay Pride movement in America, and for many gay men it offered an opportunity to come out of the closet and live their lives in the open for the first time. As the gay community sought to define itself, it's not surprising that sex, once furtive and approached with no small amount of fear and shame, suddenly became openly and publicly celebrated and sought after, and in a handful of American cities, the gay scene became the center of a ...

Overview

In 1969, the Stonewall riots in New York City sounded the opening bell of the Gay Pride movement in America, and for many gay men it offered an opportunity to come out of the closet and live their lives in the open for the first time. As the gay community sought to define itself, it's not surprising that sex, once furtive and approached with no small amount of fear and shame, suddenly became openly and publicly celebrated and sought after, and in a handful of American cities, the gay scene became the center of a wildly celebratory orgy that lasted until 1981, when the discovery of AIDS led many men to reexamine their sexual habits. Filmmaker Joseph Lovett, himself a gay activist who produced one of the first major investigative stories on AIDS to be broadcast on American television, interviewed a number of men who survived the '70s for his documentary Gay Sex in the '70s, which offers a sometimes witty and sometimes rueful look back at the discos, bathhouses, underground clubs, and gay-friendly resorts which dominated the social and sexual scene of the day, as well as the stories of the men who sought to declare their new identities through sex.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Brian J. Dillard
Carefully balancing cheeky reminiscence with mournful, post-AIDS regret, this no-frills documentary attempts to memorialize the sexual free-for-all of 1970s urban gay culture. Sometimes regretfully, sometimes defiantly, a handful of elder statesmen explain the rituals and, often, compulsions of an era in which many gay men equated personal liberation with sexual abandon. Archival photos and footage, vintage pornography, and a refreshingly underground disco soundtrack contribute to the air of naughty nostalgia. But for all its charms, the film might as well have been called "Gay Sex in New York in the '70s." The wealth of historical materials is drawn almost exclusively from the Chelsea Piers, Fire Island, Studio 54, and other legendary venues. Most of the talking heads aren't famous beyond their own cultural milieu, the most notable exception being novelist and playwright Larry Kramer. But even Kramer, whose 1978 debut novel famously satirized the era's excesses, seems more interested in explaining than critiquing. The film would probably seem more compelling to a wider audience if producer/director Joseph Lovett focused on a greater variety of viewpoints. The interviewees make little attempt, for instance, to explore gay sexual adventurousness within the wider cultural fallout of the "free love" 1960s. Nevertheless, given its zippy pacing, colorful interview subjects, and overall celebratory air, Gay Sex in the '70s will no doubt entertain those who lived through the era or only wish they'd been there.
