Overview

Longtime television director David Grossman makes his feature debut with this direct-to-video sequel to the 1997 hit family comedy George of the Jungle. Filling the loincloth originally worn by Brendan Fraser, Chris Showerman plays George this time around. Since the events of the first film, George and Ursula (Julie Benz stepping in for Leslie Mann) have had a son and made a home for themselves in George's jungle kingdom. But George is suddenly called away by his brother Ape who has run up a substantial gambling debt in Las Vegas. Once back in America to help Ape, Ursula encounters Lyle Van de Groot (Thomas Haden Church, reprising his role from the first film) who is in cahoots with Ursula's disapproving mother. When Van de Groot puts her under a hypnotic spell, Ursula no longer recognizes George, just as her mother wants. If that weren't bad enough, while George is busy trying to help Ape and rescue Ursula, a lion is attempting to stage a coup back in the jungle.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
If this produced-for-video sequel is a joke, at least the replacement cast is in on it. "I'm new George," grunts Christopher Showerman, standing in for the original film’s George: "Studio too cheap to pay (original star) Brendan Fraser." But what George 2 lacks in star power, it more than makes up for in the clever, alliterative voice-over by the nutty narrator, goofy animal subtitles for four-legged viewers, and, in the tradition of the original Jay Ward cartoons, tree-clobbering jungle slapstick. Thomas Hayden Church, the sole returning original cast member, portrays Ursula's now-vengeful former fiancé. He has a plan to cheat Ape, now a Las Vegas lounge singer (voiced by a welcome John Cleese) out of the deed to Ape Mountain, evict Tarzan, and win back a wildly empowered Ursula (who now has the strength to drive golf balls like Happy Gilmore). Meanwhile, Ursula's "really, really mean" high-society mother is also determined to bring her daughter -- as well as her movie-cute five-year-old grandson -- back to civilization. It's all as subtle as a coconut on the cranium, but the nonstop silliness will surely connect with kids. And for what it's worth, as the narrator notes, "New George takes a tree as well as Brendan Fraser."

I saw this film @ a recent screening and admittedly it's silly, but it's one of those 2 level films: something that the kids understand & some zingers only the adults will get. It's a perfect baby sitting film.
