Other cast standouts include Richard Jordan in his final film appearance as the ill-fated General Lewis Armistead, and cameo roles for Civil War buff Ken Burns and media mogul producer Ted Turner. Filmed on-location at Gettysburg National Military Park, Gettysburg was shot as a television miniseries for Turner's TNT cable channel, but earned a limited theatrical release. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

    Fabulous

Gettysburg is a fabulous movie. It's so touching and sad that brother fought against brother but did so to save this great country. I've watched it many times. I have it on my IPOD too....The musical score is in my car CD player. It's just beautiful. I highly recomment this movie

    Starts off weak, ends strong.

Gettysburg over all is very good. Though the movie starts off weak, with some pretty poor acting, it all comes together very well in the middle, and end. I think the best part of the movie is how both sides are portrayed, there are no “good guys” or “bad guys”. You tend to relate to both sides, not routing for any one side. The best actors in the movie are: Martin Sheen as General Lee, who really seems to take th role well as a God fearing General. They also did a good job in showing how the Confederate Soldiers had such deep admiration, and respect for General Lee. Sam Elliot also does a great job as General Buford. Every thing else is good, the battles are intense, the camera work is good, but the music is terrible, it doesn’t really tie in with the movie very well. Overall, it’s a great movie for a Civil War enthusiast, or History Buff.(Also recommended to show in schools.)

    Historical and Intense

Anybody that is a Civil War buff have always been fascinated by the inner and tragic relationships between Yankee and Southern troops being friends. Armistead and Hancock was a relationship overlooked by many Civil War historians. The climax scene with Hancock shot and Armistead leading Pickett's charge was nothing I have ever seen in any type of war movie.

    Gettysburg is glorious!

The movie Gettysburg is based on the novel The Killer Angels by the same person who wrote Gods & Generals. The movie is superb to it's prequel Gods & Generals. The fights are long and intense, the acting is strong, and the characters are likeable. The cast is different, in G & G you had Lee as Robert Duvall, Gen Longstreet as I don't know, Jackson as Stephen Lang, and Col Chamberlain as Jeff Daniels. In Gettysburg you have Martin Sheen as Lee, Tom Berenger as Longstreet, Jackson as dead man, and Chamberlain as Jeff Daniels. The movie I think starts off with Sgt. Buster Killrain telling Chamberlain the news of "Fighting Joe" resigning. The 2 armies of the North and South accidently meet at Gettysburg when the South tried to get some shoes (really). You see the generals making plans for attack, hear speeches that aren't pointless, the fights at the first day ,Little Round Top, and Picketts Charge. This movie might be one of those when will the fight start. Don't worry, you'll get to see the fight. The fights are more intense than Gods & Generals, especially Little Round Top and Pickett's Charge. Who will Gettysburg? Can the South overrun a Little Round Top defended by a small group of union troops led by Col Chamberlain? Can the Union stop General Pickett and his 13,000 troop? The answers are in the movie and in the books. PS there is no movie call the Last Full Measure, because it is another novel. I just the novel could be turned into a good movie.

    Gettysburg-Fulcrum for America's Future

Partly by accident and partly by design the massed armies of the North and South are tested to the maximum in this riveting recreation of this, one of the two or three major battels in the history of America. The film captures the strategy and day-day dependence on horses and primitive communications to determine the nation's future. Jeff Dainels is monumental in his depicion of Col. Chamberlain, Medal of Honor recipient forever linked to Little Round Top. This film should be a must in American history classes. It portrays a way of life and a way of committment as few other methods of expression have ever done.

    Good movie..not great

The acting was totally horrible..Sheen looked like he was wondering what the hell he was doing there. Action was good...the problem here is that the writers of the movie..the producers, etc etc..Ted Turner included, seemed to miss the news that the South LOST the war? God's & General's, the prequel...HORRIBLE! Again..the South actually LOST the war Ted. How they will handle Lee's surrender to Grant in the last book...God only knows.

A Great Movie About the Most Important Battle of the Civil War

A terrific account of what some feel was the most important battle in American history. Despite an inappropriate and sappy sound track and a really terrible performance by Martin Sheen (as R E Lee) this is a GREAT MOVIE! There will be some historical ommissions and fictional interpertations with which real CW buffs will have trouble. But what the heck, it's a 3 hour Movie, not a 3 day re-enactment. What it clearly and dramaticly gives the viewer is absolute respect for the courage and faith of the mid 19th century American.

Best Civil War Movie So Far

A fine history lesson, but it is based on a pro-Lonstreet revisionist novel and an insipid Lee character, looking dazed and confused, is further weakened by Martin Sheen's abyssmal performance. Keep in mind it's based on a work of fiction, however admirably it's done, and great chunks of dialogue were lifted from the novel. And there are some who think the south might've won the battle but for Longstreet! Nevertheless, Berenger is great, Jeff Daniels is brilliant.
