With the help of an android-technology expert named Kim voice of Naoto Takenaka, Batou and Togusa find themselves following the trail of Locus Solus, an outlaw organization that may be responsible for turning the gynoids into murderers. As he digs deeper into the investigation, Batou finds himself thinking back to his times with former colleague Major voice of Atsuko Tanaka and pondering the notion of love and attachment in an increasingly unnatural world. Ghost in the Shell: Innocence was screened in competition at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.

    Excellent Storyline and Action

This story is very complex, do not take it in a simple form. Throughout the movie philisophical quotes are used emphasizing the complexity of this film. Mind hacks, reanimation, and de ja vu are all used within the Director's purpose. If you watch the director's commentary you will find that a lot of effort went into this movie based on how "man creates dolls as an image to himself". A little creepy yes, but on a deeper level this movie reveals the utter truth in it all. Excellent artwork and music scores. I enjoyed it for its philosophical values not for its action.

    Waaaaaaah

Good flick. I think Mamoru uses CG just to prove that he can every once in a while, but I'll get over it. Worth every penny, and makes me want to learn Japanese (I'm not a subtitle kind of guy.)

Not worthy of the Ghost in the Shell mantle.

I believe someone else said that this was "not a movie for dummies". Well, sorry, but that IS what this movie is in a sense. This is basically a dumbed down version of the original Ghost in the Shell. This movie did not live up to my expectations, but unlike what one of the other reviewers thinks, this fact is not my fault. Ghost in the Shell and Stand Alone Complex set some incredibly high standards that this movie had to live up to......and Innocence fell horribly short. I think most of this came about because of poor choices though. The choice to completely change the style of the movie, the idiotic choice to rely on CGI, the hearing impaired sub-titles, the choice to make reference to another one of Oshii's films (Avalon), the choice to rip off stuff from the original, etc. It all just added up to the point where I couldn't stand watching it anymore. But, please do not take my review to heart, or send me hate emails and such, go watch this movie for yourself and make up your own mind.

Transformative Beauty Is Waiting to Work Its Magic on Everyone

I was introduced to the film by a friend who was already in love with 'the ghost.' Not knowing what to expect I watched him grow more quietly emotional as the film wound on. The music was the first thing that touched me. Then the images of love as a restorative began to sweep away any doubt that I was looking at something artistically fresh and philosophically worthy of a wider dialogue.

Most sequels dont live up to expectations...

... the problem is more with the viewer than with the film itself. Innocence is different narratively than the first film, but many of the themes from the first continue to recieve attention but are explored from a slightly different perspective: that of Batou and Togusa. Visually, this film anks with Balderunner in terms of scope and magnificence. Indeed, these two movies share alot in the way of theme except that Bladerunner was made before the internet. There were alot of references made in the movie to various writers and philosophers. i didn't know them all (i've never read anything by Confucius) and part of the delight in this film is picking all of them up. not a movie for dummies.

It gives you a more detailed story but,,

Sorry I already own this DVD since I live in Japan. I was expecting a more provocative storyline, pushing the envelope even further then the first movie. The visual is much better with introduction of CG but the storyline,, Don't take me wrong IT was a GOOD movie but from Oshii-san I was expecting BETTER than good.
