In the year 2029, the world has become interconnected by a vast electronic network that permeates every aspect of life. That same network also becomes a battlefield for Tokyo's Section Nine security force, which has been charged with apprehending the master hacker known only as the Puppet Master. Spearheading the investigation is Major Motoko Kusanagi, who -- like many in her department -- is a cyborg officer, far more powerful than her human appearance would suggest. And yet as the Puppet Master, who is even capable of hacking human minds, leaves a trail of victims robbed of their memories, Kusanagi ponders the very nature of her existence: is she purely an artificial construct, or is there more? This two disc special edition of Ghost in the Shell has been digitally remastered in anamorphic widescreen and is playable in 6.1 DTS-ES Surround Sound or 5.1 Dolby Digital-EX Surround Sound in either English or Japanese with optional English subtitles, and is also playable in Dolby Digital Stereo Sound in Spanish, French, Italian, or German. This release also includes extras such as character dossiers, creator biography, director biography, production report, Digital Works, trailers, and previews.

Ghost is adult anime without all the kiddie stuff you see in most anime. I love this show because it is deeply thinking and interesting. This is future science anime at its best. Very gritty, uncompromising, and unafraid of controversy. If you like grown up gorgeous anime then Ghost is for you!
Yes, this is definitely an Anime that can be viewed and appreciated by anyone who likes movies. In my opinion, good Anime is relatively difficult to find. There is a lot of junk out there--not what Anime should be in my view. True Anime is usually obscured by countless of other titles. This is because Anime has many definitions and everyone thinks of something else, when they hear ''Anime''. If you're not sure, rent it first. It's the best way to get started, without being turned away too early.
'Ghost in the Shell' is a visually stunning movie, with animation which is far superior to other animated films I have seen. However that is where the praise ends. It lacks a coherant plot of any kind and characters which I could have cared less for. This film has somehow gathered a reputation for being groundbreaking. Other than the animation itself, I'm not to sure how it garnered such high praise. If all you care for is great animation by all means this movie is for you. If you want something more... look elsewhere.
This was honestly, one of the best Japanese anime movies I have ever seen in my life. It's got a great plot, with just the right amount of action, and cursing to make it a good action movie. Anyone who sees this must be okay with nudity though, as it does get sorta graphic.
Not only is this my favorite anime film, nor only my favortie science fiction film, but rather in my opinion a work of art, the best movie of all time. Not only is it packed with action and stunning visuals, but it touches the deepest and most profound questions about humanity and philosophy.
great plot, great characters, great C.G.(cell graphics) sequences. I saw this for the first time about a year ago and was blown away. if u r reading this...BUY THE FILM NOW.
No, this is not a kids movie. This is a fantastic journey for any adult who wants to challenge their brain with a thought-provoking film. This movie is beautifully made and no matter how many times I see if (about 10 now) I always find something new to appreciate about this Anime classic. This is the story of a woman - a cyborg with a soul - who must do her job to bring in the bad guys, even when it goes against her own internal principals. Along the way she asks a lot of tough questions of herself, her partner, and the audience. This is not the kind of movie you watch late at night when you are tired as it will confuse (or bore) you. This is the kind of movie you need to devote your attention to as you will be pondering this film and its message for days, if not weeks, after you see it.
Note: This review pertains to the "2.0" version of GHOST IN THE SHELL available on Blu-ray. I bought this blu-ray because I absolutely love the "Ghost in the Shell" movie and was hoping that the blu-ray would have better visual/audio quality than my older VHS and DVD (Yes I still have the VHS it was originally released on). I was unaware that there were other differences. Dont get me wrong, the movie is still great. The plot is unchanged, the voice actors are the same and the soundtrack is untouched; which is all good. But what I didnt realize is that some of the sequences have been "upgraded" to CG (computer generated) animation. I'm not completely against CG, but I seriously think "Ghost" was perfectly fine the way it was. (Much like the Original Star Wars Trilogy was perfecty fine before all of its CG additions) But what really got to me was that only certain scenes were altered and it killed the fluidity of the film. It was very inconsistent. One shot would be in the original animation, the next portion of the same scene would be in the newer sharper looking CG and then back to the original. Yes the original animation is a bit dated now and the few upgraded shots only point that out much more by contrast. Again, it is still a GREAT film worthy of all the praise it has been given and if you havent seen this film already, please do as the changes won't have much impact on you. But if you are already a fan I think you would be better off renting before you buy.
Simply stunning. This complex film blends superb animation with intricate characters and a deeply thought provoking plot. It raises interesting questionns regarding the avances of technology and its effects on society. As an anime, it was one the best i have yet seen. On par with any western film on any terms. If you liked Blade Runner you will love this!
This movie is visually stunning. Unfortunately, that's all it really is--eye candy. It's lacks plot depth and a coherrent storyline, but the explosions make it fun to watch. Is this the best anime movie ever? Certainly not. I hesitate to call it a masterpiece. Its one of those movies like Akira that get way to much hype without anybody considering critically whether they are *good*. Ghost in the Shell is flashy, but if you are looking for something beyond just visuals in the action/anime genre check out Jin Roh. If you want to see a true anime masterpiece, check out Grave of the Fireflies.
Can you say ''Shinto?'' This movie is not easily understood because Japanese culture is so different from the West. Quickly, the Tokugawa Shojuns closed Japan for 260 years and preserved the culture. A Miko is a young virgin who also happens to be a Shinto Oracle. Major is a messanger of the Gods - the female verson of Hermes - and her character is influenced by the Shinto (way of the Gods) mythos. The physical attributes of Major are completely beside the point (except for teens struggling with puberty and those who have never grown up). This movie is nothing short of perfect. The original soundtrack was analogue Dolby SR (Digital wasn't quite ready for market in 1995 when this film was released). The Shinto chant ''Too kami emi tame'' or may the Gods (kami) determine your fortune, is a recurring theme and the haunting voices in the track enhance the surrealistic - even trance state - of the story. Sure there are guns and action scenes but they too are just brief breaks in the real action - a journey to find what composes the humal soul. Almost 90% of my friends just didn't ''get it'' which, ultimately, is their failing and not that of the film.
see Innocence (Ghost in the shell part 2) you must see this one first to really understand what it is about. This movie was probably the original thesis for Matrix where reality gets blurred when consciousness blends with virtual reality. I was suprised when Wachowski brothers didn't include Oshi Mamoru, the author of this movie into his Animatrix project. It really gives you something to think about. It's not the method of presentation but the story what is truely intriguing.
It was so intrigued by the thought of having a 'ghost' and a 'shell' that I got addicted to it. This anime is truly amazing, and it even inspired me to work out! (Kasanagi is wicked buff). But not only is it good for that, but it also drew me in. I've had only one other anime do that to me: Visions of Escaflowne
This is another groundbreaking anime since Akira! Well detailed and well scripted, this is an anime directed towards smart audiences. You would think anime is for kids or geeks, this shall prove you wrong!
A very deep movie about what it means to be alive. Every time I watch it, I get something new out of it. With stuning animation and amazing charactor design, this is one of the best movies out there. Not just good anime, but good sci-fi. Even if you don't like anime, this is must own for all movie lovers.
See this one. It has a deep thought provoking plot, well developed charecters and stunning visuals. Ignore what the critics say (Kendawg wouldn't know a good plot if it came up and bite him in his face) I've watched this film dozens of times now and find something new and thought provoking every time. Plus, everyone should own a movie that opens with an assaination like that.
This movie is fantastic, innovative, and highly entertaining. It is more action packed than Akira, or newer releases like Wolf Brigade. My only complaint is that it is a bit short. Nonetheless, if you want to burn one and watch some good anime, this is your movie. Plus the Matrix was essentially based on this movie.
If you like action, sci-fi, or animated films, then Ghost in the Shell is the movie for you. I first saw this movie back in 1996, and I've never gotten tired of watching it. Most people think that anime is all about cute, fluffy flying bunnies, but this film will prove what it's really all about. Ghost in the Shell is a supercharged cyberpunk masterpiece. This movie is definately on the top of my list.
confusing at times but excellent action animation and the main character is super sexy!
