He then finds himself a disembodied spirit, invisible to the living world, wandering without hope until he finds a spiteful spirit aboard the subway Vincent Schiavelli who gives him some helpful pointers on how to co-exist. Soon Sam comes back into contact with those he knew in life, and he begins to learn piece-by-piece of his close friend and co-worker Carl's Tony Goldwyn embezzling plot which caused his death; the apparent mugging was, in fact, a premeditated murder. In the meantime, Carl has designs on Molly, and Sam is determined to extract revenge. He contacts a psychic Whoopi Goldberg, and together, the two set out to serve justice and stop the maniacal Carl from getting to Molly. Blending comedy, romance, action, and horror, Ghost was a box-office smash and managed to garner five Academy Award nominations, including "Best Picture," "Best Supporting Actress" Goldberg, "Best Original Screenplay," "Best Editing," and "Best Score"; Goldberg won her first Oscar.

A highly improbable but richly emotional love story that charmed moviegoers in 1990 and became -- to the surprise of its numerous detractors -- a blockbuster hit, Ghost still retains the romantic aura that first endeared it to audiences. The film certainly boosted the careers of its stars, Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore, who portray Sam and Molly, well-to-do Manhattanites so passionately devoted to one another that not even death can rattle their bond. After a street thug shoots and kills Sam, his ghost communicates with the heartbroken Molly through medium Whoopi Goldberg, an amiable charlatan genuinely stunned by her newfound ability to converse with spirits. Director Jerry Zucker, previously known for his comedies Airplane, Kentucky Fried Movie, made an effective transition to dreamier, dramatic fare with this multiple Oscar nominee, which briefly falters when a melodramatic subplot is dragged in but recovers handily just in time for a touching denouement. At times a bit somber but generally upbeat, Ghost shows its three principal players at their most appealing, and it can still be depended upon to induce a few sighs and tears in romantically inclined viewers. The DVD includes commentaries by Zucker and screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin, and also features a newly made documentary looking back at the film’s production.

The richly entertaining Ghost touches on themes of love, loss, and revenge as it merges the genres of romance and supernatural thriller. Directed by Jerry Zucker, one member of the team that came up with Airplane! and The Naked Gun, the film manages to stay away from mawkishness; instead, it achieves a surprisingly affecting level of emotion. Offering something for everyone, the film has an afterlife story to placate those less interested in the romance between Demi Moore and Patrick Swazye, and a romance for those left cold by the supernatural elements. Whoopi Goldberg gives her hack-psychic character a near-perfect mix of comedy and dramatic gravity; she took home an Oscar for her spirited supporting turn, as did Bruce Joel Rubin for his original screenplay.

    GHOST

    GHOST: I have always loved this movie as well as the theme music -- now I am happy to own a copy. Who wouldn't enjoy the best of Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, and Whoopi Goldberg, all in the same movie? [Funny AND Sad both -- keep a Kleenex near-by.]

    Whereas there is no new footage added to this latest issue of Ghost it is well worth a look.

    When I saw the Blue Ray version on the shelf I expected yet another "directors cut"
    Well this is a re-release of the original theatrical release and that for me is quite good enough. It is a wonderful film with unforgettable performances all around, it looks stunning in its new Blue ray incarnation and I highly recommend it for anyone with a hi end system.

    AMAZING!

    I loved Patrick Swayze in this movie! The movie overall was really really great. Whoopi Goldburg and Swayze were sooo good. This movie is funny at parts and sad at parts. It is wonderful!

    get your tissues ready...

    this is by far, one of my fave movies along with king kong (the new version), and cinderella man. Whoopi Goldberg is hilarious. And Moore and Swayze are spectacular. Every time i hear unchained melody or see the ending to this movie. i bawl my eyes out!!!

    whoopi steals every scene she's in.

    one of my fave scenes is when she is trying to scam a customer and sam keeps talking to her. Saying stuff like what a crock and finaly whoopi lets out a 'Who is that. Oh and sams rendition of 'I'm henry the eightth i am!' Is great fun. I cried at the end.

    One Of My Favorites

    Love, Sadness and Humor all tied into one. It taps into all of your emotions. For a good laugh, and a good cry too--watch this very special movie.

    GHOST: GREAT MOVIE TO SHARE WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY!

    This movie was truely intresting, spooky, and well performed but patrick, and co-stars. This edge of your seat romance and connection between life and death makes you want to watch it over and over again.

    One of my Top-10 movies of all-time

    Ghost, is without a doubt, one of the finest films of all time. The music, the way evil people die and the way good people die is wonderfully crafted. The scene when Whoopi Goldberg's character hears Sam's voice for the first time is wildly funny. See this movie and you will not have a dry eye in the house at the end of the movie.
