Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Cowabunga! This two-disc set is the absolute ultimate! The Gidget series was a comparatively wholesome and fresh-faced answer to the rock 'n' roll and juvenile delinquent exploitation films of the 1950s. Gidget ushered in the new wave of beach party films, with the irrepressible Sandra Dee as 16-year-old "small fry" Francine, a tomboy who experiences one of those only-in-the-movies turning-point summers. Unlike her boy-crazy girlfriends, Francine becomes more interested in surfing and is adopted by the local beach bums, who dub her Gidget (girl + midget). Teen idol James Darren costars as first love Moondoggie (in all three films), with Cliff Robertson as the original Kahuna (also look for Tom Billy Jack Laughlin as surfer Loverboy). Gidget Goes Hawaiian, with Deborah Walley, is kept afloat by a great supporting cast, including Carl Reiner, Peggy Cass, and Michael Callan, as Moondoggie’s rival for Gidget's affections. Gidget Goes to Rome, with Cindy Carol in the title role, is a wipeout but still offers dreamy-eyed romantic entanglements for Gidget and Moondoggie, as well as the kind of endearingly klutzy slapstick practiced today by Hillary Duff and Amanda Bynes (either of which, by the way, would make groovy modern-day Gidgets). The pan-and-scan presentation of the original Gidget is all wet, but this collection will be a blast from the past for baby boomers, and a girls-just-want-to-have-fun-in-the-sun kick for not-too-jaded teens who find Grease suitably ginchy."

    Great for a Girl's Night

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I have to admit, I'm a sucker when it comes to teen movies, esp. the old ones! Gidget is one of those timeless films every young girl should watch!

    Boop Here! a #1 fan.

This to me is a real classic, good clean and warm hearted, short lived summer love. Should have made more of these. Moondoggie and Gidget are the "ULTIMATE COOLEST COUPLE"

    Missing one Gidget

I own all 3 of these films and enjoy them all, but they're missing the final 'Gidget Grows up'. My favorite of all the Gidget films, it seems to have been overlooked for release to VHS or DVD manufacturers. I'm still waiting and was disappointed when I saw this title without the final episode that tied it all up.
