The longest "three-hour tour" in history gets under way in the first season of Gilligan's Island. In the course of the season's 36 episodes, originally filmed in black and white, the viewer becomes intimately familiar with the famous seven stranded castaways: Skipper Jonas Grumby Alan Hale Jr. and first mate Gilligan Bob Denver of the S.S. Overview

Minnow, run aground on an unchartered desert isle after a ferocious storm; millionaire Thurston Howell III Jim Backus and his wife, Lovey Natalie Schafer, who have apparently brought along their entire expensive wardrobe; movie star Ginger Grant Tina Louise, who always manages to find cosmetics despite being marooned thousands of miles from civilization; secretary Mary Ann Summers Dawn Wells, she of the cute halter tops and short-shorts; and Professor Roy Hinckley Russell Johnson, an expert on everything except a means of getting off the island or even repairing the Minnow. Episodes during the first season focus on the castaways' various escape attempts, their efforts at acclimating themselves to their new environment, and the petty squabbles and power plays that threaten to break the group up into Survivor-like warring tribes. Although the regulars are unable to leave the island, quite a few guest stars manage to make their way to the isle's shores, among them Hans Conried as bungling pilot Wrong-Way Feldman, Vito Scotti as a misplaced WWII-era Japanese soldier, Larry Storch as mobster Jackson Farrell, Kurt Russell as a junior-league Tarzan, and Denny Miller as handsome surfer Duke Williams. Of course, the scriptwriters always manage to find some way of getting these visitors back to civilization -- without ever revealing the existence or location of the castaways!

    I Also Recommend:

    Gilligan and the gang harken back to a time when America was innocent and good....no wonder it's never been off TV in over forty years.

    Why do they hate us? It just may be because of Gilligan's Island...I don't think so!!

    In a recent (Aug. 2009) interview with Dawn Wells (Mary Ann) she stated that Gilligan's Island has not been off the air since 1964 and has been aired in over 30 languages. She told of one conversation with a fan who grew up watching GI in Farsi (the language of Iran). GI is among the most and longest watched comedies internationally of all time.

    Why? Obviously, it's funny, but....

    Could it be that the entire world longs for the America seen in Gilligan's Island (innocence and with goodwill) rather than the America of the X-Files (conspiracy and government evil/cover-up)?

    Yet, even in Gilligan's Island the USA was atop the world and proud of it:

    Skipper=American military might
    Howells=American capitalism
    Professor=American technological superiority
    Ginger=American cultural influence through movies
    Mary Ann=American sense of beauty, who doesn't love those short/shorts?
    and, of course:
    Gilligan=American naivete and innocence, yet he's a good guy with no ill will toward anyone.

    And we were not resented--yet.

    Gilligan's Island stopped production in 1967 and has never been off the air.

    Apparently much of the world wants to behold the America of before 1967. Interesting. And, coincidentally, the opening shots to the program in season one were filmed on the day of the assassination of JFK (See Russell Johnson's book "Here on Gilligan's Isle).

    What in the world happened to America between 1963-1967? Evidently something that most of us, and many around the world, would rather forget and instead imagine us to be, even to today in reruns, as innocent as Gilligan's Island.

    But, alas, it ain't so!!

    Great to Watch with Your Kids

    We ordered the Complete Series Collection and have watched with our eight and four-year-old sons. They love it as much as we did (and do!)

    Family fun viewing!

    We discovered that our kids really love what we refer to as "Retro T.V.". We love this series and can watch episodes over and over. Even our toddler will watch an episode now and then and has favorites but so will our young teenagers. Lots of T.V. programming is a bit abrasive in content and language now, but back then it was more clever and entertaining and harmless. We only wish it had more than three seasons!
