Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Lydia Vanderloo
Although it hasn't enjoyed the blockbuster success of such earlier WB hits as Dawson's Creek, the mother-daughter series Gilmore Girls has built a rabid fan base with its clever dialogue, engaging characters, and potent doses of drama. Collecting the show's entire first season 21 episodes, this set allows fans to explore the kinetic relationship between spunky Lorelai Gilmore Lauren Graham and her bookish teen daughter, Rory Alexis Bledel, as well as to savor the spitfire dialogue that distinguishes the show from common fare. Fans who eagerly attempt to decipher each and every cultural reference in the scripts will relish the bonus material, which includes lengthy interview clips with the show's creators and actors, plus a scene featuring deconstructed "factoids." Season 1 introduces the series' main players, including the intimidating, blue-blooded senior Gilmores Kelly Bishop and Edward Herrmann -- who have always had a tenuous relationship with their only daughter -- along with Lorelai's best buddies, accident-prone chef Sookie Melissa McCarthy and scruffy diner owner Luke Scott Patterson, who's got his own magnetic rapport with Ms. G. The colorful supporting characters, minor in screen time only, bring to life the milieu of tiny Stars Hollow, Connecticut. Standouts include: Keiko Agena as Rory's buddy Lane, a pop music-obsessed teen struggling with a strict Korean mom; Jared Padalecki as Rory’s perfect first boyfriend, Dean; and Yanic Truesdale as the endearing and curmudgeonly concierge Michel. Lorelai and Rory's joint obsessions, from food to film nights, lend a sisterly tone to their relationship, as do their dovetailing romances: Rory's with Dean and Lorelai's with English teacher Max Scott Cohen. But when the going gets tough, as when private school tuition necessitates an appeal to Rory's grandparents, Lorelai is every bit the mom, albeit in her own unconventional way. Both heartbreaking and heartwarming, Gilmore Girls offers laughs and truisms for every generation.

    I Also Recommend:

    A heartwarming, lovable series

This is the first in the Gilmore Girl sereis. It starts out with a detailed plot with vivid characters. They all add to the series' quirkiness and likability. From debutante balls to graduations, this show teaches it all. Rory and Lorealai show a fantastic, stimulation mother-daughter relationship.<BR/><BR/>One review in the paper said mothers and daughter would stand sitting in the same room together to watch this show. Truthfully, I believe it. Not only does it teach good lessons, but it shows how to make bad situations better over time.<BR/><BR/>Many shows a dreary, or can only be watched once or twice. Well, this is NOT one of those!!! My sister and I have watched it so many times we can recite the script by knowing which episode it is. <BR/><BR/>If you watch this show, I guarentee you will love it.

    A great television show

This series is really great. I recently had surgery and while home I watched the entire series of Gilmore Girls. It really hits you close to home just how wonderful the mother and daughter reaction is. It makes you want to have that with your mother. I reccomend this to anyone who wants a good, lighthearted show that most of the topics discussed are relatively close to what we go through every day.

    The Best Show Ever

This highly underrated show is the best television show on tv. I got the dvd and got my sister who had said she did not want to bother watching Gilmore Girls hooked. Now she watches it when I come home from school. If you get confused by the fast talking stick with it because you get use to it real quick and then you will fall in love with every character on the show and will wish that Stars Hollow was a real place you could vist.

Best Mom and Daughter show in a LONG time

This is one of the best mother/daughter shows on television today. I always watch this show with my mom and everyone else should too. The conversations between Lorelai and Rory are so witty and hilarious that I have to watch the whole season in one sitting because I can't take my eyes off the screen when this show is on. I love this show!

    the best show ever!

i love this show and have been addicted to it since season 1! lorlei and rory have a relationship to envy and there is just the right amount of humor to balance out the drama created in small town stars hollow. i am thrilled they have finally put it on dvd. unfortunately where i just moved to they don't have gilmore girls so these dvds are perfect for me.if you have never seen the show then now is the perfect time to start- its an easy show to get into and love!

Never chimed in before but GET THIS DVD.

For those of you missing the 'feel-good, I can relate to this, this could be my life, chummy comedy' of Sex and the City, this is your (MUCH TAMER) show. I don't know what it is about this show, but you always feel better after watching it. The main characters are compelling; the writing is deep AND hilarious (a rare blend); and who can't relate to sleeping late and then remembering you forgot to pick up your dry cleaning, and running into your worst enemy when you look ridiculous??!?! Perfect get your girlfriends together and watch DVD.

    Best T.V. show ever!

My heading says it all! I love this show because it shows the relationship between a young lady, Lorelai, who had a child at a young age, and because of that (and other things) she doesn't really fit in with her parents (mostly her mom.) Through all the good times, bad times, and everything in between, she and her daughter, Rory, stick together and love each other more everyday! It's a great show that shows the kind of relationship every girl wants with her mother.
