More About This Product

Overview

Kino International deserves praise and criticism for putting this attractive (but also deceptive) box set together from five already-existing DVD releases in its catalog. The title itself is a bit dubious -- Marlene Dietrich in The Blue Angel and Ava Gardner in Pandora And The Flying Dutchman qualify as "glamour girls," but Lucille Ball, Margaret Sullavan, and Jeanette MacDonald do not. But four of the five movies, The Blue Angel, The Good Fairy, Love Me Tonight, and Pandora And The Flying Dutchman, are, at least, first-rate pictures and, in the cases of Love Me Tonight and The Blue Angel, outright classics. Ah, but there's where the deceptiveness comes in -- a close look at the outside of the box reveals that The Blue Angel is represented here in its English-language version, which is more a curio than a proper presentation of the movie; and what's more, by extension, the commentary track that graced the German-language version on Kino's free-standing double-DVD set of The Blue Angel, as well as all of the other extras from that set, are absent here as well. So the value of this set is seriously compromised from the get-go; and Kino's packaging is especially misleading since Dietrich's image from the movie is used to sell the set, and one has to look very closely to see the caveat about the English language version. All of those complaints stand quite apart from the inevitable question one might have about the presence of Lured (1947) -- a relatively low-budget British-made thriller starring Lucille Ball (definitely no glamour girl) and directed by Douglas Sirk, it is in no way comparable to the quality of the other four movies. Oddly enough, however, the list price of the set is low enough so that it can still be justified as a purchase, based on the presence of Love Me Tonight, The Good Fairy, and Pandora & The Flying Dutchman, as these would still be more expensive as individual purchases. If one buys it on that basis, and treats Lured and the English-language version of The Blue Angel as mere bonuses, the latter as a teaser for the "real" movie and the full two-disc set.
