Overview

Giant monsters are rampaging in cities across the globe, and as the Earth Defense Force struggles to find a way to defeat the malicious mutants, their only hope lies frozen in the Antarctic in Versus director Ryuhei Kitamura futuristic entry into the long-running kaiju series. In the near future, Earth is being decimated by monsters that have been mysteriously unleashed in every major city from New York to Sydney, and as the world population falls into a paralyzing state of panic, the Earth Defense Force must stage a daring initiative to save the human race. After a giant unidentified flying object suddenly appears and vaporizes the beasts in a matter of seconds, the relieved citizens of Earth are comforted to hear that the newly arrived alien race is seeking to make a peace treaty with humankind. All is not as it seems, however, and as the nefarious aliens reveal their true nature, it's up to Godzilla to take back the planet -- or die trying.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
The 28th and (they say) final installment in this 50-year series pulls out all the stops and presents Godzilla fans with a two-hour smackdown resembling nothing so much as a mega-monster edition of Wrestlemania. With Godzilla frozen in ice beneath the South Pole, his old nemeses reappear -- under the control of an alien race known as the Xilians -- and lay waste to the world's greatest cities. When humanity's efforts to stop the monster-and-alien onslaught prove ineffectual, Godzilla is brought forth to shift the balance of power. Although Final Wars boasts exceptional production values for a Toho production, it maintains the essence of the series' appeal: guys in rubber monster suits trampling miniature cities underfoot and blowing up toy tanks with blasts of radioactive breath. There's some CGI work, but not much, and that's deliberate. Those managing the Godzilla franchise know full well that the character's nostalgic appeal has nothing to do with the special effects. The "human" aspect of the story is, as usual, superfluous: The real treat is seeing such old favorites as Mothra, Ghidra, Rodan, and Gigantis back in action. And when Our Hero finally wades off into the Pacific, having once again leveled Tokyo, it's with an almost palpable sense of regret.
