Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
This mid-'70s BBC comedy, known as The Good Life in the U.K., employs a traditional sitcom structure while exploring the counterculture spirit of the time; specifically, the back-to-the-land movement. The basic premise has Tom Good (played by Richard Briers) and his wife, Barbara (Felicity Kendal), opting out of the rat race to become totally self-sufficient within the confines of their home in the London suburb of Surbiton. Raising animals and growing their own crops for food, the Goods often implement outlandish schemes, much to the consternation of their conservative, social-climbing neighbors, Margot (Penelope Keith) and Jerry Leadbetter (Paul Eddington). This box set collects all 21 episodes of the first three seasons, which include some nifty ones. In "Say Little Hen," the Leadbetters learn the extent of the Goods' new lifestyle and are appalled. "The Thing in the Cellar" finds Tom searching for alternate food sources when a load of dung winds up in his basement. When two students arrive to lend Tom some assistance, his rebellious nature inspires them, and he becomes the unwitting "Guru of Surbiton." "Going to Pot" is a great showcase for Penelope Keith, as Margot becomes jealous of an artistically gifted neighbor and takes up pottery to prove her own mettle. "The Wind-Break War," one of the last episodes in Season 3, chronicles the development of a full-blown feud between the Goods and the Leadbetters. What really made The Good Neighbors work so well, and what keeps it fresh several decades later, is the chemistry among the principals. As is often the case with Britain’s best sitcoms, the actors inhabit their roles so thoroughly that it almost seems like reality TV, only better.
