Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
A luscious and fantastic adaptation of Mervyn Peake's novels Titus Groan and Gormenghast, this BBC costume drama is a neo-gothic masterpiece. The story follows the ancient family of Groan, who have been incarcerated for centuries in the vast crumbling castle of Gormenghast. The dynasty is threatened by the charismatic Steerpike (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) who escapes his destiny as a kitchen boy. As Steerpike charms and outwits the eccentric inhabitants into submission, including the beautiful Fuchsia (Neve McIntosh), only Titus (Andrew N. Robertson) stands in his way. The young Earl and his pretender fight a bloody duel against the fantastic backdrop of the disintegrating castle. The impressive ensemble cast features fine turns by the legendary Christopher Lee, Jeeves & Wooster's Stephen Fry, Bridget Jones's Diary's Celia Imrie, Richard Griffiths, and Ian Richardson.

Wonderful storyline! Easy to follow along to, especially when it comes to the alluring, charming, yet evil Steerpike as he makes his way up the Groan ladder to high power. Breathtaking scenery and a wonderful display of acting. It is a must buy for any Gormenghast fan!!!!!

When I first saw the end of this movie on PBS, I knew that I would have to see the whole thing from the beginning. The cast is fabulous, and you find yourself becoming amazingly involved in the plot and in the lives of the characters. A must-have for anyone.

It's really an enchanting movie in and of itself, but, being a big fan of the book, I found the adaptation to be a bit lacking. Although, I must say, the cast was quite impressive. Especially Christopher Lee as Flay. The twins were also wonderfully portrayed.

This was a beautifully filmed and acted work, however, I could not wholly "get into" the whole story. Truly strange and only for the hard-core British drama fans, of which I am one. So, I watched every bit of it, but probably will not watch it again.
