Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Just in case you don't hear it enough on the radio, Elmo and Patsy's omnipresent holiday novelty tune comes to life in this produced-for-video animated family feature. Not to worry: Grandma doesn't die in this version (although younger children may be upset by the lingering image of Grandma lying motionless in the snow). She does get run over by Santa's reindeer, but it's part of a scheme by Cousin Mel (surprisingly recast here as a wily, curvaceous redhead) to wrest control of Grandma's quaint general store and sell out to Austin Bucks. With Grandma missing -- the accident has left her with amnesia and Mel is hiding her in clueless seclusion -- Santa Claus himself is put on trial for hit-and-run. It's up to grandson and true believer Jake Spankenheimer to find Grandma and clear Santa's name. This offbeat holiday offering has the gentle tickle of spiked eggnog, but adults will also get a kick out of one spirited ode to that most dreaded of holiday culinary traditions, the fruitcake.
