Great Silence

Overview

Generally regarded as one of the finest spaghetti Westerns ever produced, director Sergio Corbucci's snowbound oater arrives on DVD courtesy of Fantoma. Presented in 1.66:1 widescreen, the image is crisp, the colors vivid, and the transfer remarkably clean. Though there is a slightly distracting "waffle" pattern during a few scenes, this is a result of the cinematographer's choice of diffusion and not an issue with Fantoma's fantastic transfer.

Though a minor annoyance, this effect does disappear rather quickly and very early on. Audio is presented in English Dolby Digital Mono with a barely audible but consistent background hiss present throughout. Of course, Fantoma should be commended for their efforts to get this release on the shelves in the first place, and their inclusion of some informative extra features certainly contributes to making this a disc worthy of adding to the collection. In addition to presenting the film completely uncensored and uncut, Fantoma includes liner notes and a video introduction by Repo Man and Straight to Hell director Alex Cox, which offers some valuable insight into both the production and Corbucci's career. An alternate, "happy ending" that was shot specifically for Western markets is also included (with brief commentary by Cox), and a theatrical trailer rounds things out nicely.
