Aside of a small amount of edge enhancement, this is a very crisp and pleasing image. The soundtrack is presented in a newly created Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround soundtrack in English, as well as Dolby 2.0 Surround in English, French, and Spanish. While a few directional effects pop up now and then, overall this is a fairly subdued soundtrack that is focused through the center and front speakers. All aspects of the soundtrack are free and clear of any excessive hiss or distortion. Also included on this disc are English, French, and Spanish subtitles. Fans will be very happy to see Gremlins finally released in a coveted special edition featuring mounds of extra features. Starting off the disc are two commentary tracks, one by director Joe Dante and actors Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Dick Miller, and Howie Mandel and a second by Dante, producer Mike Finnell and special effects creator Chris Walas. Both of these commentary tracks are funny, informative, and filled with witty stories and recollections about the film's history. A bland behind-the-scenes featurette, which was produced in 1984, runs about eight minutes long and includes standard interviews with the cast and crew (including a very young Steven Spielberg). Some deleted scenes are presented in a non-anamorphic rough version with optional commentary by various cast and crew members. Finally there is a rather short still gallery with about 30 images, some filmographies on the cast and crew, production notes, and trailers for Gremlins and Gremlins 2: The New Batch.

Executive producer Steven Spielberg teamed with horror director Joe Dante The Howling for this comical shockfest, written by Chris Columbus Mrs. Doubtfire in his Hollywood breakthrough. A Capra-inspired Christmas classic -- bizarro-world Frank Capra, at least -- Gremlins gleefully straddles the line between funny and frightening, as an army of animatronic creatures wreak havoc in a small town before the human residents figure out what's hit them and strike back. The story follows precocious Billy Peltzer Zach Galligan, who receives a cute-and-fuzzy pre-Furby "Mogwai" named Gizmo voiced by Howie Mandel from his inventor dad Hoyt Axton. Gizmo comes with three strict, if cryptic, rules of pet care: no bright light; no water; and, most important, no midnight snacks. But rules are made to be broken: Soon enough, the winter wonderland of Kingston Falls catches a bad case of the Gremlins, and we have a monster movie on our hands. Ugly, green, and extremely mean, these Mogwai transmutations are the polar opposite of cuddly Gizmo. They seek only to torture and humiliate, which results in some shockingly crude physical comedy. From Billy's sweetly sarcastic coworker Kate Phoebe Cates to mean old Mrs. Deagle Polly Holliday, no one escapes the depredations of these creepy critters. In 1990, Dante directed a sequel, which concentrated more on comedy than fright, but it's the original Gremlins that stays in moviegoers' minds.

Chock full of wide-eyed furry creatures that were being aggressively marketed as stuffed animals, Gremlins undoubtedly sent a misleading message to a lot of parents. The affiliation of executive producer Steven Spielberg, who was fresh off the success of E.T., surely encouraged parents further, but many were left shielding their children's eyes as a gaggle of reptilian gnomes burst forth from a swimming pool and began smoking cigarettes, wielding chainsaws, and killing off townspeople. Gremlins is not appropriate for kids, and it drew a lot of complaints, but it has some jokey pleasures and plenty of satirical bite, as a Capra-esque small town is turned inside out on Christmas Eve. The film was a box-office smash and a cultural touch point, with the viewing public quickly learning the three steps to avoid transforming the impossibly precious Mogwais into the all-id gremlins. The violence against humans is mostly cartoonish and bloodless, but the gremlins don't get off so easy; in a memorable kitchen sequence, featuring a terrified Frances Lee McCain, a pair of pursuing baddies get offed in a microwave and a blender, their orange guts splattered hither and non. Although directed by Joe Dante, the film features the undeniably Spielberg-ian theme of imperiled innocence in middle America, as well as his love for imaginative creatures. And the special effects crew has a grand time bringing it all together, making for a taut horror fantasy with lasting appeal.

    Steven Steilberg did incredible!

    If anyone but Steven would have done this movie they would not have been able to do it half as good. GIzmo is so awsome!

    Gremlins

    I LOVE Gremlins!!!! I saw it with a friend and it has become a favorite with the both of us ever since! It's creepy and funny and cute. Gremlins is the best!

    grrrrrreeeemmmilns

    i remember when i first saw this movie i was about 10 yrs. old. i was so in love with gizmo. i couldn't stand spike the old ugly gremlin he would always pick on gizmo and make me sad. but over all this movie is truely a classic in my book.

    The Original and Best

    Gremlins is the greatest movie of the 1980's! Steven Speilberg does an outstanding job directing. The speical effects used to create the gremlins are wonderful. Every move, sound and action is convincing. Gizmo is a lovable hero. Every kid wanted a pet mogwai. This movie does a great job portraying typical small town life. The moive sends a great message about what how people break the most basic of rules, sometimes without even knowing it.

    i think this movie is just an awsome movie. i saw this movie when i was about seven or eight and i thought it was just a great movie. i just loved it so much. my favorite character is gizmoe because he is just so cute.

    Truly one of the great ones

    An amazing film that kept me in suspense. I saw it when I was six, and it scared the hell out of me. Same with the second. I still get the creeps when I watch this movie now a days. Perfectly blending black comedy and modern horror, this movie was a hit then, and remains a hit NOW.

    Everyone love Gremlins....

    I can't believe that i Start to love Gremlins so much. It's very very cute little animal. This movei is the best, No mattter what ago you are, you will love this movie so much.

    I loved Gremlins so much!!!!! I especaly thought Gizmoe was cute and fluffy. I liked him so much i named one of my puppies Gizmoe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Excellent

    Having seen this movie when I was 13 (it was the first-ever PG-13 movie), it still ranks as one great movie. One thing that made the movie worth seeing for many was the enormously cute ''Bye, Billy'' that was spoken by Gizmo (voice by Howie Mandel) at the end. Even some of the Gremlins' words before they created havoc made the misery funny. Who could have imagined watching a gremlin being blown up in a microwave? Or a Gremlin being butchered in a blender? Comedy with the fake gore makes it all the more funny. Highly recommend for anyone, but some caution for all the blood and guts (none human - unless you count the old lady being thrown out the window when her ''lift'' is hotwired).
