Overview

Launched as a mid-season replacement on ABC in spring 2005, this sex-soaked medical soap opera quickly became a hit during its nine-episode inaugural run. Creator/executive producer Shonda Rhimes, who wrote the first three episodes herself, wasted no time in setting up the central conflicts at Seattle Grace. In taking an internship at the hospital where her mother once enjoyed great renown as a surgeon, beautiful Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) must suffer through not only heightened expectations, but also the terrible secret that her mother now suffers from Alzheimer's. As if that's not enough, Meredith also enters into an unlikely romance with her boss, Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), aka "Dr. McDreamy." Once word gets out, the affair irks most of Meredith's co-workers: no-nonsense senior resident Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), who toes the party line regarding resident/intern romance; nice-guy intern George O'Malley (T.R. Knight), who harbors a not-so-secret crush on Meredith; and ultra-competitive intern Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), who believes Shepherd is playing favorites with Meredith. Much to her own surprise, however, Cristina soon finds herself hooking up with Preston Burke (Isaiah Washington), who's not only her supervisor but also Shepherd's rival for chief resident. As for surgeons-in-training Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl) and Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), they're too busy loathing each other to get caught up in any inter-office romance. Chief of Surgery Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.), too, remains above the fray -- until, during the cliffhanger season finale, he inadvertently affects the course of Meredith and McDreamy's relationship by hiring a new pediatric surgeon (guest star Kate Walsh) with a surprising link to Derek's past.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Just when we thought the genre of hospital drama was all played out, along comes this striking new show, a midseason replacement whose immediate success dwarfed that of the popular show it was meant only temporarily to displace. Grey's Anatomy takes place at Seattle Grace, a prestigious training hospital, and follows five surgical interns -- Meredith Grey Ellen Pompeo, Cristina Yang Sandra Oh, Isobel Stevens Katherine Heigl, Alex Karev Justin Chambers, and George O'Malley T. R. Knight -- as they vie for choice operating-room assignments and interact with the experienced residents, among them Drs. Derek Shepherd Patrick Dempsey, Preston Burke Isaiah Washington, and the fearsome Miranda Bailey Chandra Wilson. Series creator and chief writer Shonda Rhimes does a marvelous job at the outset of giving these characters disparate personalities and having them interact in unexpected ways under difficult circumstances. The show's first year also revolves to some extent around the romance between Meredith and "Doctor McDreamy" that's Shepherd, for those of you unfamiliar with the series, a relationship that comes to a screeching halt in the season finale. It's hard to pick outstanding episodes because, frankly, they're all quite good. One look at Season 1 will tell you why Grey's Anatomy has become the hottest new network drama in years.

    Admit me! I'm Hooked

After my friends insisting, I finally gave in and watched her Grey's collection. I was hooked imediantly. Not only are the characters likeable and some quirky, it explores the human personality and things we go through. Keep watching all the seasons for even more indepth twists and turns. Striving to make it in a dog-eat-dog world, this loveable cast of characters will surely make you smile after a hard days work!

    A reviewer

But it was not. Sad. It is just a silly soap! Very simple-minded and unchallenging. Unoriginal. Even Scrubs is more realistic in many ways. But maybe all this is the reason why it has become so successfull? Standard, "safe" drama? Boring to me anyhow, but hey - I like quality.

Like it, but don't love it.

After hearing all the hype, I decided to give this show a try. While it is interesting, I feel like it is just the unfunny version of Scrubs. They even use some of the same lines! Also, the title character is so self-centered she is hard to watch. Overall, the show is entertaining, but I would recommend Scrubs.

    Not just another doctor show

While Grey's Anatomy is a doctor show, it is not just like all of those out there - House, Nip/Tuck, and so on - Grey's is unique. It shows the life of interns working at Seattle Grace Hospital, and their struggles while being at the bottom of the surgical food chain. Grey's Anatomy not only is an enthralling, entertaining, and amazing show, but it is incredibly addictive, as well.

    Stunning!

One of the best TV shows to come along in many years! I've been disenchanted with TV for quite awhile, but I took a chance on GA and I've never regretted it for a second. Why can't we have more shows of this caliber?

When will Season 2 be available for DVD? Cannot wait.

Grey's Anatomy is great. It so down to earth. The actors are exceptional in their portrayal of our (human ) all our frailties. The casting was brilliant you love all of the characters, every one. I am very selective in my TV viewing. After seeing this show for the first time I was HOOKED. Cannot wait for Season 2 on DVD.

    SPECTACULAR!

This show is so amazing. I introduced it to my friends and now we watch it every Sunday! The plots of every episode are intense and intriguing, just like a book you can't put down. This is by far one of my favorite shows and the actors and actresses play the parts so well, it feels like a real hospital. With the romantic/daily lives of doctors as well. Overall, an amazing show which I would recomend to anyone!
