Grindhouse Psychos!: Cop Killers/Tenement/Don't Go in the House

Overview

Even if Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's tribute to classic sleaze cinema Grindhouse was a box-office disappointment, it certainly put the nickname for inner-city movie houses back into circulation, and more importantly it encouraged a number of home video distributors to put to top-shelf exploitation flicks back into circulation on DVD, and this box set from Media Blasters' horror imprint Shriek Show offers three wildly idiosyncratic thrillers.

Grindhouse Psychos Triple Feature feature the movies Cop Killers (aka Sweet, Mean and Deadly), Don't Go In The House and Tenement: Game of Survival (aka Tenement, Game of Survival and Slaughter In The South Bronx). Tenement has been given a full-frame transfer at 1.33:1, while the other two features are presented in widescreen -- Cop Killers at 1.78:1 and Don't Go In The House at 1.85:1 -- and are enhanced for anamorphic play on 16x9 monitors and letterboxed on conventional televisions. The transfers are consistently good, though the source print used for Cop Killers has clearly seen some rough use over the years. The audio for all three features has been mastered in Dolby Digital Stereo, while retaining the monophonic mixes, and the quality is as good as the source materials allow. The three films are in English, with no multiple language options or subtitles included. Each film includes an optional audio commentary -- Tenement with director Roberta Findlay, Don't Go In The Basement with leading man Dan Grimaldi, and Cop Killers with actor Jason Williams -- and each commentator also sits for an on-camera interview about the film in question. Each disc also includes the theatrical trailer for the feature, as well as previews of other titles available from Media Blasters. And Tenement also features a gallery of still photos, while Don't Go In The House features two scenes in unmatted form, revealing details unseen in their widescreen form. Each of the three movies included in this box set can be purchased separately, but the given the "three for the price of one" list price of this set, Grindhouse Psychos Triple Feature is a bargain for folks with a taste for savage cinema, and the presentation should agree with adventurous cinephiles.
