Many people were surprised when this film became such a big hit with audiences and critics. I really, really liked this film when it was released, but 11 1/2 years later, it's lost some of its magic. Jack Lemmon and Waltr Matthau are both great in it but seem bored at certain times. Ann-Margret really carries the film on the her back, as it tends to get very boring when she's not onscreen. Burgess Meredith is wasted in his role, which is a shame since he had some hilarious moments in this film and carried the scenes without Ann-Margret in them. The plot, two old men after a beautiful middle aged widow, is ripe comedy fodder, but often is sidetracked. The supporting cast of Daryl Hannah, Kevin Pollak, Ossie Davis and Buck Henry is very good, and the main actors are excellent (even though Ann and Burgess hold it in place), but this film hasn't really aged as well you might think.

I enjoyed this movie very much. Matthau is great and so is Lemmon! Burgess Meredith is great too. Ann Margret really wraps it all up, she brings the whole thing together! Great casting! A very cute movie to enjoy over and over.
