Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
When is an online role-playing game not an online role-playing game? When it is .hack//SIGN, the anime series about online role-playing. But just because it's a tie-in with a PlayStation 2 title doesn't mean that .hack//SIGN should be lumped in with the likes of Pokémon and company. Both the .hack game and the show were created by some of anime's top talents, including character designer Yoshiyuki Sakamoto ( Neon Genesis Evangelion) and screenwriter Kazunori Ito (Ghost in the Shell). The story follows Tsukasa, who is an introverted, habitual gamer in "The World," an online virtual environment set to "sword and sorcery" mode. One day, Tsukasa discovers that he can't log off or get back to his body in the real world. The mystery deepens when he discovers that he's been granted magical abilities far beyond those of other players in The World. Finding a way back to reality will require Tsukasa to master his new skills as well as (gasp!) get along with other people, specifically a sword-wielding girl named Mimiru. Offering intriguing storytelling in its own right, as well as wry commentary on lives spent online, .hack//SIGN is highly recommended for anime fans and Internet addicts alike. This second volume of episodes, Outcast, includes episodes 6-10. Volk Lindsay
