Half-Cocked/Radiation

Overview

Two independent, music-themed features from acclaimed filmmakers Michael Galinsky and Suki Hawley are paired up on this double-feature DVD from Rumur Films. Both Half-Cocked and Radiation have been transferred to disc in their original full-frame aspect ratio of 1.33:1; the often grainy black and white images of Half-Cocked don't fare as well as the sharper, more colorful camerawork in Radiation, but the first feature certainly looks much better here than on its long out-of-print VHS edition, and both have been ...

Overview

Two independent, music-themed features from acclaimed filmmakers Michael Galinsky and Suki Hawley are paired up on this double-feature DVD from Rumur Films. Both Half-Cocked and Radiation have been transferred to disc in their original full-frame aspect ratio of 1.33:1; the often grainy black and white images of Half-Cocked don't fare as well as the sharper, more colorful camerawork in Radiation, but the first feature certainly looks much better here than on its long out-of-print VHS edition, and both have been brought to the digital medium with care. Half-Cocked is in English, while Radiation is in English and Spanish; neither film includes a multiple language option, but Radiation includes burned-in subtitles translating the Spanish dialogue. The audio for both films has been mastered in Dolby Digital Stereo, and once again Radiation has the technical edge, though the sound on Half-Cocked is somewhat improved in this edition. As a bonus, this disc includes two extensive photo galleries featuring Michael Galinsky's work -- one features the material from his book Scraps accompanied by spoken word material from a number of musicians featured in the pictures, and the other presents an unpublished photo book with music from Drop Ceiling. A third gallery features photos by Sean Meadows and artwork by Jeff Hamm, both members of the cast of Half-Cocked. Finally, the disc is rounded out with musical performances from the tour that produced Radiation, a short and witty look at the travails of making Radiation in Spain while staging a traveling film festival, and a music video for the group Spaceheads co-directed by Suki Hawley. Half-Cocked is one of the most honest and underappreciated film ever made about rock music, and Radiation is a similarly intelligent and compelling work, and Rumur Films is to be thanked for making them available on DVD, which will hopefully help them find the larger audiences they deserve.
