    Too bad there's no CD...

If you like French Grand Opera, then you will love this well-directed, well-sung, and extremely well-acted performance of Ambroise Thomas' Hamlet. Simon Keenlyside is a force of nature in the title role, breathing life into the Danish prince with depth, pathos and flawless singing. The British baritone won an Olivier Award for this performance and it is easy to see why: he is a magnificent actor, able to convery great emotion with a simple look or a carefully modulated vocal inflection. Natalie Dessay is a winning Ophelie, excellently handling the rangy demands of the role with her ringing soprano. She is at her best when she is onstage with her Hamlet, their love duet near the beginning of the opera approaches sublimity, and Dessay's interpretation of the famous mad scene is sung with passion and precision. The rest of the cast neither adds greatness to nor detracts form this production, as the opera lives or dies on the strengh of Hamlet and Ophelie. If you are a fan of French opera, or of Simon Keenlyside or Natalie Dessay, this is not to be passed by!
