In 2005, March of the Penguins identified a real appetite among moviegoers for flightless waterfowl. As movie characters, mind you, not menu items. The next year, Happy Feet drove that phenomenon over the top, grossing just shy of 200 million dollars on its way to upsetting perennial favorite Pixar for the Best Animated Feature Oscar. The victory was an upset not just because Pixar's Cars was better than expected, but also because Happy Feet isn't as good as the numbers suggest. George Miller's film does benefit from a delightful concept. According to Happy Feet, the mating ritual made famous by March is actually a matter of mutual serenade, with penguins finding their soul mates to the strains of modern pop music. But Happy Feet gets kind of stuck in this concept phase, never blossoming into an involving narrative. Mumble, voiced by Elijah Wood, is your standard outsider -- insert your favorite ugly duckling metaphor here. But his supposed deficiency is that he dances rather than sings -- a complementary skill, one would think, whose uniqueness should elevate him, rather than ostracizing him toward a mission of heroic redemption. This mission allows for some strong set pieces and breathtaking images of the Antarctic landscape and fauna, but it also brings audiences into contact with two super-annoying Robin Williams characters, both voiced as politically incorrect racial stereotypes. By the time it's finished, Mumble's journey has gone places that stretch even the minimal logic required for a kid's movie. Perhaps that gets at the shortcomings of the entire film. While it's infectious enough to slot right in as a new classic for young children, and visually advanced enough to wow audiences of any age, it's also flawed enough that adults won't want to join in on their kids' inevitable repeat viewings.

    Christian conservatives will not like this movie...

    so they should exercise their right not to see it and let the rest of us enjoy a film with no violence (other than a hungry leopard seal), no sex (other than the amigos going about courting entirely the wrong way), no bad language, so subversive message (ok, the religious right and anti-environmentalists will no doubt disagree). The story is big on humor, on friendship, on being proactive (the Great Gwen never said don't be curious about the world), and most importantly, being true to oneself.

    CUTE

    I really enjoyed this movie, cute, funny and loving. After that i made my boyfriend buy me a mumble to keep im my car. Loved it

    Robin Williams

    This was a great movie. I really liked how they took old and new songs and adapted them to fit the film. Let me just say that Robin Williams is a genius. He really makes the movie. The way that he sings and his cute little puns I laugh at all the time. The end of the movie was disturbing when they tried to put in a sae the world plug. That was annoying. Until then movie was great.

    The Cutest Movie Ever!!!

    OMG I loved this movie and I'm 14!! I don't know why I liked it, but I do. The baby penguins are adorable and I love how all the penguins sing. It is kinda weird when they dance, but I loved the movie anyway.

    The best kid movie, which you'll like also

    This movie has no cursing and no real bad guys and a great ending. It is about one penguin who is differentfrom the others and how he keeps true to himself and becomes accepted and loved by all. Lots of singing and dancing. If you need sarcasm and killing this is not the movie for you.

    Who doesn't like penguins with Spanish accents???

    Oh man, I LOVED it!!! It was extremely funny for me and my little siblings. Elijah Wood makes a great tap-dancing penguin, and it was hilarious to hear Robin Williams fake a Spanish accent. It was especially sweet for my family, because my little brother has low muscle tone and whenever he is excited or happy, he has to stand up and hop from foot to foot. We call it his "happy dance", and after the movie he tried turning it into a sort of tapdance.

    Great!

    I watched this and I was amazed of what I saw on Happy Feet. They really amazed me! And it does deserve to be an Academy Award(R) (along with Cars, Over the Hedge, Flushed Away and other nominees). And the special features are great! Awesome! Don't believe in some people who hates this.

    FANTASTIC!!!

    You have to see "March of the Penguins" first to understand WHY penguins are singing. Then it all makes sense. The movie is funny, made with such passion for details. It is not traditional "Disney" fairy-tale. There is a serious message in the movie. We don't have kids. Nevertheless, we enjoyed it a lot!

    Great movie

    This movie was very funny. I think I was laughing more than my daughter was, but she enjoyed it as well. One of our favorite movies. I'm usually a one time movie watcher, but I can watch this over and over again.

    Sick

    This movie is peer propoganda and nothing less. If people keep making children's movies this way, and other people keep supporting them by bringing their kids to it, then yeah maybe the movie's message is right: We humans should go extinct because we're dumb enough to keep going in that direction. Save your time and your money. And even though I side with Pixar in the great "animation war," (though it's really no contest) I'd say you're even better off watching a Dreamworks movie.

    Happy Feet

    The only people who should like this movie are atheistic enviromentalists or those who are too stupid to see the underlying meanings. I absolutely DESPISED how the environmentalists had to wiggle their way into a children's movie. Listen! I recycle, I conserve energy, I don't kill any stray cats in my backyard so I am so sick of everyone saying "go green" "save the whales". I go see a movie so I don't have to deal with that. But in this movie they basically say that humans should become extinct, we're ruining the planet, blah, blah, blah. Then comes the atheism. The penguins have a god which is supposedly punishing them for having a weird bird in their club or whatever it is. Which it's really (supposedly) the human's fault, not the penguin god's. Which is just reflecting on all of the good people who believe in a god that they're idiotic. Well, I can't wait for the day that I can laugh in their face!!!

    Happy Feet

    This movie is stupid. And, I absolutely LOATHE the little, subtle message it was giving. I felt that the penguin's "god" Gwen or something was like the God. And they were saying that if you believe in God that you're like those penguins who thought that they had a god too. But of course, the penguin's god didn't exist. And then one time they said "In Gwen We Trust!" like America's "In God We Trust". I felt it was saying Christians are idiotic for believing in a God by comparing it to dumb penguins. And then of course comes the human's part in this movie. Oh, us bad old humans, destroying the world! Okay, I know that the rainforest is dying and we're killing all of those cute little animals and humans should die because the world will be better, but I want to escape that stuff in the movies! I don't want to hear about how terrible we are. I just want to get away from that stuff. I hear it everyday on the radio, TV, etc, etc, etc. Also, there is A LOT of sexual referances. I was like, dang, this is PG? KIDS are supposed to WATCH this stuff? Not good for children (unless you want your kid to be like that)! Yeah, and it was really random. One second they're singing a sad song and then BA BAM! they're off on a happy tune. Goodness! I think this is my second least favorite movie. (you don't even want to get me started on my first!) So yeah, it's stupid. Okay? All in all, don't watch it!

    Skip this one....

    I feel bad giving a movie about penguins a bad review, but I have to in this case. This movie committed the cardinal sin of bad movies, it was BORING. I kept waiting for it to end. If you want to see a good penguin movie, please watch "March of the Penguins".

    Very disappointed

    While the penguins were cute (Baby Mumble and the Hispanic penguins he later made friends with were cute), this movie is NOT for young childern. With the constant theme of mating in the foreground, I would be very cautious to let your children view this video. I was very disappointed to see sex become such a blatant issue in a "kid's" movie. There's just no place for it.

    A reviewer

    This is one of the biggest disappointments for my family and me in a very long time. True, the animation is awesome but that is the only thing. It is a depressing movie with a political agenda. I, myself, am a conservationist but this went too far and was not suitable for kids. My son thought it boring and wanted to go home in the middle of it when we saw it at the theatre. The fun-loving side of the iceberg where all Hispanic - talk about stereotypical. The Elvis impersonation was decent but a bit over the top. The leaders were all portrayed as religious FANATICS - all people of faith are not like that. And to top it off - all the pollution seemed to be located near a church. The trek across the ice to find the source of the pollution and decline of available fish was slow and painful (and I am speaking for myself - not the penguins). And in less than 5 minutes all the problems of the world were solved by one little tap-dancing penguin. I am a true fan of animated movies but this one bites!!!

    Ok...

    ..this movie has been THE weirdest movie I have ever seen! I mean, penguins singing for luv, and Mumble be excluded from everything because he can't sing?OMG, that is just d-u-m-b!!! Little kids MIGHT enjoy it. My little brother only thought is was OK. The only thing that was cute, or anything to laugh at besides how dumb the movie was the little penguins with spanish accents.don't waste your $$$ on this piece of garbage!
